As many of you may know my 6.5's been gone for a while now, but I'm getting closer and closer to getting back into the game, but since I've got my 08 k1500 I'll have time to do what I want with this truck. it may be a pipe dream, but I'm hoping to take my time and produce an high-power truck that I WANT to drive.

My question is in regards to the manual tranny... I think the NV4500 was the manual tranny that came with the 6.5... this truck WILL be a manual, but if a 6 speed ZF-6 will bolt up, I will do it. Does anyone know if the manual tranny from the 6.6 will fit on the 6.5?

If things are how they use to be (lBB and SB to any trans)it should, but I cant say for sure.

Try Advance Adaptors. They make just about everything known to man. They were the first to make Th 350 adaptors to replace junk Th700s etc...

IIRC the zf6 requires/has a dual mass flywheel...when used with the dmax...not sure what would be required if anything to make it work with a 6.5...do they(6.5's) use a dual mass flywheel with their manual trannies as well?

Not to my knowledge but I'm basing that off 6.2s . If the bellhousing bolts up that of course raises the question...Would an allison work...

afaik the 6.5s w/ the NV4500 came stock with the dual mass flywheel. Some change to the single mass flywheel after the dual mass comes apart if memory serves me correctly.

No, after GM had enough complaints about the dual mass they changed to single mass in the later years. I'm not sure what the year break was.

Learn something new everyday. Thanks for the info. :smile5:

IIRC I've seen some conversion kits to make the Duramax ZF-6 a single-mass flywheel... if that was going to be a problem.

Yes, some of the 6.5's with the NV4500 had the dual mass flywheel. As to which ones had it, it seems to be a shot in the dark. I was told my 96 was equiped with one, but when we droped the tranny, it was a solid flywheel. Now they do make a solid flywheel conversion kit so it could have been changed once before. So either way, dual mass or solid, it should work.

If you were installing one or the other, I would go with the solid. Alot cheaper. I believe the origonal concept was to provide a smoother engagement with the dual mass acting as a "second clutch." It was used for higher torque applications, such as the 6.5 and ford 7.3's. But the high price to replace the worn out dual mass flywheel, promoted the solid conversion kits.
