Never had to do it before. Now it wants to sputter out every time and need to step on the throttle to start it again and hold the throttle high for a few moments. Any ideas for me

Does this only happen from cold starts? Could be a few things. What comes to mind is starting system such as glow plugs, glow plug relay, filters, injectors, lift pump.

Any codes? What year is the truck?

sounds to me like the fuel system is bleeding back, IIRC there's supposed to be a check valve of sorts built into the factory LP.

Its a 95 it seems to be getting worse and was just stubleing on light acceleration..but going when i really step on it..im suspecting the lift pump..i checked it just recently and it started shortly after that. It fires up fine then dies in a few seconds..then have to give it throttle to go again.

It is chilly but was doing it when warm to...so i just went and checked , in gear and engine off you can hear the lift pump when the key is turned ,but when running and i open the water drain it dies. So it seems my ops is gone .. and this could be the problem with starting correct??

LP's can make noise and not pump, put the drain line in a container, then turn the ign. to start in gear as you have. if there is fuel, then it is the ops, if not, then it is the LP.

Thinking about this, and if the LP is Fubar, there will be no fuel either way, sorry about the wrong info.

It actually applied to my situation as lift pump is pumping but as soon as it fires up and I open the drain valve, the engine dies out, so going to get a new ops today and I guess I should wire in a relay as well.. Thanks for the help..will report back as Im expecting better starts now.. It makes sence as it fires right away no problem then struggles and stumbles real bad after the first few seconds.. I was thinking it dosent stumble on acceleration maybe cause I got the feed the beast set up with bigger fuel line from the fuel manager.

So I have a newer block and did not remove the ops under the manifold, so I swaped the connector onto that switch and it fired up properly and idled right, no throttle, so im going to get a relay and wire it in so that ops can live...thanks for the help here, it was invaluble to figureing out my issue....would have probably cost me $1000 to have a shop tell me I need a new engine, ha ha..

Got a bosch relay wired up and its all working well, filled a pop can pretty quick through the water drain off the fuel manager with the engine running, i did go get a new ops for it as well..no more throttle to start it..took it out to do errands and its running great. Thanks again
