Hey guys, I'm new to the truck stop and also new to the 6.5L. I just bought this truck about a month ago from an older gentleman who bought it new. I've been doing alittle routine matience on the truck since I bought it. Changed the fuel filter, the lift pump, air filter, just the normal stuff. I just put on a new custom exhaust this morning, 3" from the soot trap back, then 3" duals out the rear. But now I've noticed that when you rev it up theres some white smoke, it doesn't do it while driving, just when you rev it up. Is this a problem to worry about? Thanks for the help guys!

it's a 94, it has 105,xxx. I also don't think the lift pump is working the way it should. I'm going to go buy a OPS tomorrow and change that out as well.

It was at operating temp, but its about 29° outside right now. I just put an AC delco lift pump on a week ago, I just like to put on the parts that I know can go bad that don't really cost an arm and a leg to do.

With Communist countries making a lot of replacement parts including AC Delco stuff - New parts do NOT mean working parts.

White smoke is usually injection timing - possibly stretched timing chain. Could also be weak IP or injectors. Injectors are rated for 100K miles before you need to rebuild them. These precup engines are kinda known to smoke white esp downhill.

Should be a diesel smell.

Coolant is a possibility from heads or head gaskets.

It is a diesel smell, but it never smokes while driving. Could the weak IP be from the lift pump not working? I'm 1,800 miles from my house working so I don't really have any tools to speak of up here, so I don't think I'll be able to put in a set of injectors right now.

So you will have trouble passing emissions - maybe. I would do injectors when you get a chance just from being over 100K. Avoid the Chinese made knock off injectors/nozzles.

Cold temps and no load cool the precups off. This makes smoking white worse.

Again check the IP return for air bubbles as this can cause all kinds of issues.

Is it puffs of white smoke or steady? Puffs are a single cyl having issues like a burnt valve or sticking/worn injector.

Well we don't have emissions, so thats not a problem. It doesn't really have a load, but I carry a welding machine with all my tools and stuff in the bed all total probably 2500lbs? I checked the IP return, no air bubbles. I doesn't smoke at idle, just when I rev it up. I can rev it up and hold it and no white smoke.

29 is a glow plug fault , 35 is a fuel selenoid responce time to short. the 35 should be the only one that would be applicable to the white smoke. if it starts hard you need to check glow plugs/controller. personally I'd check the timing first.

you fix that code by eliminateing all other possibilities first. start by cleaning all grounds especially the one on the back of the intake manifold, should be 3. you also should be running an additive such as 2 stoke oil or ND30wt as ulsd fuel is too dry. also CHECK THE TIMING. if someone has messed with it before you got it the timing could be waaaaay off and for the most part you won't notice it. if all those don't change anything then it's time for a new IP

Well I've done all of those except for check the timing on it. I don't really have a way to check the timing where I am right now. So I guess it time to start searching for a new IP...

PMD's can also give a code 35 & 36. I have one that will.

Where is yours mounted? Do you have a spare to try? I don't think the pmd would be a cause of the white smoke though. Just a possible cause of the code 35.

Where are you located now? Maybe a member nearby has a means of setting your timing.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm gonna see what I can't figure out with this thing, I'm glad its just a backup fig for me. Butbits my primary one right now.
