I'm starting with a new surveying company tomorrow (orientation Wednesday, on the job site Thursday) and I will be using my truck. I'm getting paid pretty well on top of my salary for use of my truck, so I'm okay with it. Plus it's a truck, and it should be worked. Anyway, back to my question in my title. With the old surveying company I worked with an uncle of mine, and we had a 15' length of 1/2" chain; rated at 10,000 lbs that we used as our recovery strap. It was bulky, but worked well, got us pulled out about a half dozen times and we pulled a few trucks out too with it. So I was curious if I should go with a nylon strap that would be a little lighter weight, or with the chain. The weight and bulkiness doesn't really bother me, it will be in my tool box in the bed of the truck. But was just wondering what you guys that off road a bit suggest I get. I will be off roading about 95% of the job. We are doing the surveying work for the oil pipeline that runs through Wisconsin and Illinois and further south. It will be solid work for a minimum of 5 years, if not more. Thanks for any and all input.

I always use a chain like you used, a strap would be safer I would guess...
Sounds like a fun job! Good luck and dont get stuck to much! :)

I actually find the job a lot of fun. I am outside everyday, so summer time I get to work on my tan:smilewinkgrin:, and the midwest winter weather doesn't bother me too much. When the temp gets below 0* then I'm not a big fan, but it just means one more layer goes on. But I get to use some of the most state of the art GPS equipment around, good enough to get you within 0.005 of a foot of your target point. The egineering company I was with before, we were able to use roads that lead to a project and then if a project was in the early stages, we would have to go off road. So with this job being primarily away from most roads, the Dmax will get a work out; which I'm sure it will do just fine. So yeah, along with the work I do, I get paid to go off roading 6 days a week.

Hmm I usually use a combination. I know Lowe's sells a decent "logging chain" They have coated ones that seem to last longer. Also, tractor supply sells real nice thick recovery straps. IIRC there rated at like 40,000 :sifone:

Yeah, thats what I was looking for. Don't have a Tractor Supply around me, but maybe I'll check out what Farm and Fleet has. Sunday I'll be able to run down to the Lowe's by me and see what they have. I'd like something like that Logging Chain you saw if that has a good wieght rating. Home Depot only had 3/8" chain that was rated at ~3900 lbs and Menards only had crap that I'm not sure would hold up my 27 lbs daughters on her swingset. The Ace Hardware in town had 3/8" chain that was rated at 5900 lbs. Good, but not what I wanted.

I just looked on Tractor Supply's website, and found out that the town I will be working out of for this job (Delavan, WI) has a Tractor Supply right in town. Score one for me!

Awesome!

I just remembered. When I started towing I bought some decent chain from NAPA. They had to order it but it was bigger thab 3/8 IIRC.

This may be a great opportunity to justify a nice HD winch and HD bumper as a business expense.

(You, might even ask your boss if they would spring for it, since you'll be using the truck in adverse off-road condition and any long delays in getting to a job site would be costly. :))

If you're going to be offroad you NEED;) a lift, especially if the company is paying you to use your truck. Perhaps a 6-8 inches would allow you to run big enough rubber to keep from dragging the undercarriage.

Dave you need a 3"x30ft it will do very thing you need getting stuck, chains suck and dangerous when you break them. They are very hard on a truck if you need to jerk on one and you will straps give some but you can still jerk them hard. Chains are heavy take up to much room, strap roll it up leave under seat, tool box can't go wrong good luck on the new job

Roger that. A strap is much better than a chain.

most local (4wheelparts) type store usually carry large straps. I picked up a 3"x30' 30k working load, last year from then when they were running a $20 special on them(actually picked up 6 but only two for me) then just this winter picked up a 6"x40' from TSC. Straps are much safer then chains. You also dont have to worry about twists in the chain (which turns out to be very dangerous. Almost did some damage by this happening with a chain). I've used straps for the past couple years and wouldnt switch back for anything.

my strap is a 30 foot 120,000 lb working load limit, 60k basket... it's about 4" wide or so and it is beefy enough that basically if you break it you did something wrong.

check a peterbilt dealer

Do a Google search for ARB Snatch Strap. You will find a whole slew of on-line vendors that sell them at various prices.

The ARB snatch straps are specifically designed to stretch and come in various sizes and load ratings (17,000 24,000 and 33,000 lbs).

I saw a recovery strap somewhere that when it was going bad, the red layer showed through, and then it is time to replace it, that was cool, but i don't remember where it was from or who made it

Sounds more like a rigging strap for a crane. I've seen the warning labels on them, "if such and such fibers are showing, dispose of immediately..."

Idk, i think ARB or someone makes it, it has a red layer underneath, and when it wears to the red, it is time to replace. It was on Xtreme 4x4

I never use chains to pull anything. Too many broken windows, and dented hoods & tailgates. I have a 4"X30' strap, don't know who made it, can't remember how long I've had it. Can't seem to break it, if it does come loose, it recoils a little, then just lays down.

When a chain comes loose, it takes off with enough energy to do some serious damage. My two cents.
