Were these all the NV4500 or is there a possibility of it being a NV3500? Either way, I would only be interested in a K2500 or K3500 and would be for 1995 model year.

Factory should be a NV4500 for a Diesel and the RPO code should be MW3 as far as I know (mostly from research when I was looking into my clutch options yrs ago).

According to quad4x4.com NV4500 production changes....

For GM:

1992-1994 transmissions had a wider gear ratio with 1st gear being 6.34-1. Starting in 1995, the 1st gear ratio was changed to 5.61-1.
1992-1998 models did not have a synchronized reverse gear. A synchronized reverse was introduced for the 1999 model year
1992-93 models had an interlock mechanism built into the 1-2 syncro to prevent high speed downshifts into 1st or second gear. This feature was dropped for 1994 according to our GM parts book, however we have found them on some 1994 transmissions.
1992-1995 transmissions had a bellhousing bolt pattern unique to GM. For 1996 and newer transmissions, GM uses the Dodge bolt pattern.
In 1997, New Venture changed the design of reverse gear from a dual plane to a single plane. The reverse gear ratio was changed from 5.61:1 to 5.04:1

all I know is that the newer ones with single plane cannot have the lower gears from 92-94. therefore, if you want to have the 6.34 1st and reverse in your 96-00 truck with the internal slave cylinder, and shared trans. to bellhousing pattern with dodge, then you have to find a 1996 transmission and rebuild it with the lower gears. guess what I am looking for! :)

but yes, on topic, unless it has been changed, the only 5 speed behind the 6.5L turbo was the NV4500.

MW3 is definitely the most common code, but I think MT8 was also one code. of course compnine.com is a great place to see if the truck is a factory manual trans. truck.

MT8 is the code for the lower geared NV4500.

If your using the truck as a driver, I can honestly say the second generation higher geared transmission is much more comfortable to drive.

I picked up a donor truck today for my transmission swap. It's got a lot of miles on the ticker, but it's actually in decent shape. It's not running, but has all the necessary parts to do the swap I've wanted to do. It's a '95 6.5TD EC/LB, as well, so it should be as straight forward as it could possibly be. I'll get it running and be sure all the mechanicals are right before I start swapping parts, but I'm in no hurry at this point. Just having it and not needing to look anymore is enough for me right now. It's not eating anything, so it can sit a while and won't hurt my feelings.

glad to hear you finally got a swap rig! murphys law, I never found any exact matches, it was always 1 off, regular cab, 2wd, 96 or 94, etc.

you will have the one with the removeable shifter stub, the 5.61 1st and reverse, the external slave cylinder, and you can rebuild it with the low 1st and reverse if you tow alot.

good luck with the swap!

Thanks, it's been a long wait!

RPO code appears to be MWZ, but it might be MW3 - they're really hard to read. It does have 4.10 gears and limited slip rear. I'll have to find a column or something since it has a column shift column in it. Not sure how molested it is, but there is no cover on it. Now I know why... Maybe I can just disconnect the U-Joint for the shift lever on mine and leave it intact, rather than pulling it out. Then I'll just find a set of covers for the manual transmission columns.

so it is a factory manual transmission truck that the PO put an automatic column in? I would try and find a manual column myself, I would think that a gasser column would be the same, but I may not be correct.

Yeah, one of the previous owners put a regular column in it. If I can't make it look like it came from the factory like it had a manual shift column in it, then I won't do it. I want it so that the only way to tell it's been changed out is if someone runs the VIN.
