Where to find timing pointer?

IIRC most of the newer trucks don't have one. I know my 99 doesn't. The older ones were on the timing cover and indicated on the HB.
 
Not sure what the end goal is but the factory pointers usually aren't all that accurate. Seen them be several degrees.
 
Yeah, once the heads are on, need something to tell where top of the pistons are. I was thinking during assembly while the heads are still off.

In that case, a machinist's straight edge across the bore and a feeler gauge to find minimum clearance to the edge or maximum protrusion above the block, depending on the pistons used.
