What makes a CDR bad?

I just replaced my CDR because I was seeing a little oil on occasion leaking out the rear main seal. I was wondering what happens to them to make them bad? I took a look in there with a flashlight and it looked pretty clean, especially for 327,000 miles. I guess I was expecting to look in there and see a bunch of gunk.
