What does the transfer case in the 1996 Suburban take for fluid?

I have Some Royal Purple here that is supposed to be a replacement for Auto Trak.

Or does it take transmission fluid?

Most transfer cases use ATF.

IIRC aluminum cases use ATF and cast iron cases use gear oil, as a rule of thumb.

I have to service the 96 soon and I've lost track of what fluids go in what vehicles. It's amazing what you forget after a few years

As long as the suburban does not have autotrac you can use regular Atf. If it has autotrac you have to use the stuff for autotrac

My '96 calls for dexron III

If it doesn't have auto 4WD option on the dash switch, then it is a DEXRON 3 type fluid. The autotrac/smurf oil is OK but not really reccomended for the dexron 3 applications.
