West coast mirrors

Lately I've noticed some mirrors I like on newer (03-05-ish) 3500 dumps. They are like a standard west coast mirror, only they are all black with a black frame, and they don't have the big legs going down to the door bolting a hole right in the middle of the doorskin, which I hate. So I've started looking around a little bit, but haven't found anything. I know I can't afford them from the dealer.
My truck came with big ugly flip out towing mirrors, which also bolted all over the doorskin, in fact I still have 3 plugged holes on each door. (I'm looking to replace the doors soon) I removed the ugly mirrors and put on sport mirrors, but they are kind of wimpy looking not to mention very ineffective for towing and plowing. I can't help but think they'd give the truck a more work-truck heavy duty appearance, and work a lot better.

Any idea where I can get some repros of the black west coasts? Anybody got any pics of some on a truck?

Also, my trucks a 97 bodystyle, but I don't think there could be all that much difference in the door mounting that some adjustment wouldn't fix.

Someone posted on here somewhere a thread where they put some newer dodge tow mirrors on the older chevys. They looked pretty sharp. I've wondered how it would look to put the topkick/kodiak mirrors on 3/4 ton chevy.

Our trucks do not have a big choice on towing mirrors. You have the Cipa tow mirrors, I like them. I had them on my 1998 Chevrolet I owned a few years back.

I have not seen the west coast tow mirrors you are talking about. Maybe you can stop the person you have seen and ask him were he purchased them at.

Wish you luck!

I'm sure you have seen them, you probably just never heard them called west coast mirrors. Maybe there's other names, but west coast is the only name I know.
They are factory mirrors, but not the plastic ones that mount in the corner of the window. They are aluminum, rectangular and mount using tubular brackets. Look at what most commercial trucks have, those are west coast mirrors. I'll see if I can find a pic to link to.

I understand what mirrors you are talking about now.

I will see if I can help you out.

These are factory mirrors, it should not be to hard to find it in all black!

Here is a picture with the chrome,

Nope, those arent west coast. Those are what they had from 88-93 or 94. That's one of my other options, there is a little bit bigger mirror area. But they west coast are tube mount that bolt to the door above and below the window.

So this has to be a west coast mirror;

Are you talking about the kodiak mirrors?

Sparkey,

I do not think you could ever get those to fit on a 1 ton chevrolet. :nono:

Of course you could. Make a backer plate to go behind the fender, and drill and tap it. Make a couple extra little holes that are drilled and tapped so you can screw the backer to the fender. Make a foam gasket, although you probably don't even need to do that, and bolt the mirror to the fender. Done.

I know that you can get a junior version of a west coast. they have a flat bar on the top and bottom where they bolt to the door. they don't have the brace to the middle of the door. I think that they're about 3/4 of the size. the only place I've seen them new is at some of the transport supply places. I can't say that I 've seen the ones your referring to.

The JR west coast mirrors are like what someone posted earlier on a Ford (post #10). They are too small. The ones in Packratts attached photo above are the west coast mirrors my truck would have come with, if it had come with west coast mirrors. I don't really like them because of the way they mount all over the door. But they are west coast mirrors, thanks for posting that pic. The ones I am interested in have the big vertical rectangular mirror, but the frame only bolts just above and below the window, much less obnoxious than those tubular aluminum legs running every which way.
btw, I love Kodiaks, and when I win the lottery I'm going to have a big black crewcab dually Kodiak with every available D-max power adder there is. But, sadly, I think those Kodiak mirrors are the ugliest thing about the trucks. I did see a set on a Kodiak that was painted Cadillac white pearl, with the mirrors painted to match, and they were bearable. I think if I did hang a set on my 3500 it would create a bit of a blind spot.

As a side note, I just picked up a set of good used doors off an 88, and they have the bigger corner mount factory mirrors like someone posted early on (post #8). I'll probably keep them until the black west coast ones turn up, they should be more effective than my little sport mirrors.

Try JC Whitney. I've seen the mirrors you are talking about in a catalog of box van parts. A vending service on my route gets it. Next time one passes by I'll get the info.
