Water Pump Removal/Replacement Question

Hello all,

I am waist deep in my water pump removal. I have all bolts removed and the old original pump doesn't want to budge from the block.

Any tips/advice to get it to break free? I'm about to really start hammering.

And yes, I've double checked, all bolts are off!
 
I always use a hammer.. maybe Im a little redneck, I dont know.. :D
 
When I look at the new pump, there are 5 little threaded holes on the inside, like you'd need to remove the plate holding the IP in to access them.

Are these connected somehow that I can't get? I've removed 7 bolts from the outside forward face, and I'm getting some movement, via large pry bar and cussing.
 
When I replaced my pump, I could not believe how much crap had to be removed. There was always one more bolt or bracket that needed to be removed. I know you already said this, but double, triple check that all bolts are removed. However, your '95 might be different than my '99.
 
Holy hell, you aren't kidding. I missed that the backing plate had to be removed. 12 more bolts to go.

I may have found an unexpected surprise. Timing gears? Photo to follow. The IP isn't being driven by a chain.

That is normal IIRC, its been a couple years scene Ive been in one

Indirectly, the IP is driven by the timing chain. The big gear you're looking at is driven by the cam gear which is driven by the timing chain. So yes, timing chain wear will affect your timing.
 
Be sure to pull the bypass hose nipple off the old pump as the new one does not come with it(at least my reman one didn't) and the dealer told me it was no longer available. Found that out after it was already too late.:mad2:

Thank you. My old one would not, I mean not, come off. A 3/4 pipe thread brass fitting did the trick instead.

Once you figure these old dinosaur's out, they really grow on me.

Not to rub it in or anything, but my brand-new water pump take-off from Peninsular came with the backing plate and a nice new rubber grommet for the oil filler. ...and the nipple. All for less than a nasty ol' reman.

The first thing I did after buying my truck was to buy a set of factory manuals. All 4 volumes for about $36 on Fleabay. I got lucky.

The second thing I did was to yank out the engine. ...not so lucky after all, I suppose.
