America First!
Engine cold and best done in the shade. Preferably early AM or late afternoon.
Spray all areas with a pump type sprayer (spray bottle) of Simple Green full strength. Let it soak several minutes but don't let it dry. I usually do some misting after 5 minutes or so to keep it wet and allow it to soak longer. Hit it with your garden hose real well. Don't get too carried away around the electronics and connectors but they will withstand some abuse. DO NOT USE A PRESSURE WASHER! If you see a few spots you missed you can repeat those. Otherwise just wipe it down with a towel real well. Fire it up and let it get warm to dry it some more. There will be some water blown around by the fan you will want to dry off. Go for a drive and get a good heat cycle in it and park it with the hood closed to trap the heat in for complete drying. In my case I have such hard water at the yard hydrant that I'll leave tons of water spots on the exterior around the engine bay so the next step is a good wash job anyhow.
