what's the best bang for your buck out there? right know we have trend micro/pc-cillin but it's outta date. I need one that doesn't eat up alot of resources. any suggestions?

Microsoft security essentials. Works better than any I've ever had, very non invasive or a resourse hog and best of all it's free!

Note: None of the products available out there will work well unless you update the signature files and scan engines when they are made available.

Freeware:

Malware Bytes Anti Malware -- non-TSR (always on), so run as needed, excellent at finding/removing Trojan Horses, even in compressed archives, and also scans network drives (!!!)

Spybot Search & Destroy -- two components: one TSR "Tea Timer" which is a resource hog so disable this feature; other non-TSR, run as needed and scans network drives, too.

AntiVirus Grisoft AVG v.8.x -- TSR works very well and scans e-mails, too; can schedule scans and updates.

Ad-Aware -- TSR works very well, manual web update.

I run AVG and Ad-Aware's TSR continuously without exacting a performance hit. If I had to choose only one, it would be AVG. I run MBAM as needed, my big-gun virus/Trojan Horse killer on those really nasty critters. Once I've installed the above on family, friends and clients' PCs, they haven't come back... except my nephew's laptop which he uses to... never mind that.

Good luck,
Franko

All of these are great. We use at work Sunbelt Vipre and it seems to do a great job with not much power hogging...

Ditto here...I have it on all my puters at home and have also put it on our kids and friends puters.
Very simple and it works! It's been the best I've used so far...M$ got this one right.
