About a month or so ago I had to replace the rockerarm retainers on the 6.5 and of course I redid the valve covers with "Ultra Black".They're leaking again and this time on to my exhaust. This has me a little worried.Everyone says not to use a ready-made gasket but is there one that would hold up?

Thanks

Did you straithen the cover mating surface and clean both the head and cover with brakeclean before using the ultra black?

for best result screw the cover down hand tight, let it sit an hour before torquing it down, and leave it sit overnight before running the engine

Did you completely clean the surface? Removing all traces of oil and other garbage?

Even if the covers are not 100% flat, a clean surface should seal. IMEx

It had a gasket and I scraped off all traces of it.I removed all of the oil that I could with "blue towels"(which I need to buy stock in the company).LOL Then I finished with rubbing alcohol.

Seemed clean.I'm thinking about going back with "The Right Stuff".

Brakeklean is the best.

Of course the CRIL won't allow the good brakeklean with Xylene to be sold anymore. The reformulated version is acetone based. Acetone is ok, but stinks and eats the nitrile gloves. Xylene works much better and doesn't soften the gloves as much.

I have to bootleg the good brakekleen from Indiana.

If you head down to the Local dealership ask for a tube of Mopar ?Anarobic? RTV Sealer. The mechanics at the parts house down here refer to it as black magic. Probably similar to "Right Stuff". About 8 dollars a tube but will cure in the presence of oil and grease. I use this stuff on everything. Stinks to high heaven but havent had any issues with it leaking. I bought Several rebuilt 6.5 cores from a Govt. Auction several years ago and evidenlty it is common practice for the military rebuilders to ditch the gaskets and use this sealer liberally around the valve covers and oil pans as I had to beat them off with a rubber mallet and pry them up with a flat head screw driver. But strangely they had no signs of leaking.

If you over torque the bolts you bend the covers around the bolt holes. Cork gaskets help you 'recover' from this vs. a thin bead of RTV.

How bad is the blowby on the engine? Too much will pop seals...

That happens with cork gaskets, not with the RVT.

Was/is a common problem on all engines using gaskets with sheet metal covers and oil pans. A good quality RTV is much better
