vacuum pump - oil pump drive or serp belt???

I have either option open to me. What is the best way to run???

I would definitely go w/ the more modern serpentine drive setup.

If it's a simple bolt-on & no alignment issues, you get a more rigid & efficient system using just one belt.

You'd have the additional cost of the accessory belt drive damper. But w/ that you get the additional damping for accessories which is supposed to improve accessory lifespan.

The early 6.2's with common v-belt drive would really have the belts hopping when idling. I've just observed it & don't know if there were any problems associated with this. But after becoming accustomed to how smooth serp belt systems run, you really notice the difference.

Edit..... just caught that it's primarily the actual vac pump you're wondering about. If you need to run a vac pump, I would still recommend the serp belt version as it's a newer system & if you ever need a replacement, it's probably more widely available.

OK, it sounds like the serp setup is the way to go. I have the stuff to run either and will be running a serp setup regardless. What goes in place of the oil pump driven vacuum pump?

That location drives the oil pump, pretty much like many domestic gasser v8 distributors drive the oil pump.

The manual tranny truck's oil pump drive goes in that location just like a gasser distributor, except there's nothing protruding up - the oil pump drive top is sealed - sorta like a soft plug.

Think the auto tranny trucks (at least some years) use an oil pump drive w/ some type of rpm sensor attached on the top of the drive.

Search "6.5 diesel oil pump drive" & you should find some pics of these parts.

Actually this thread reminds me, my photo album has a pic of an oil pump priming tool I made from one of the auto tranny oil pump drives. Removed the rpm sensor stuff, ground down the gear that get's driven by the cam, then you can chuck a drill on the shaft & spin the oil pump to prime oiling system.
