I get up early to take my son hunting sunday and starter sounds like bendix isn't kicking out. been driving and starting fine. 2 month old starter so shouldn't be that. look under there and one starter bolt is gone and the little bolt that holds the starter support bracket to the starter is gone. bolt or block wasn't broken luckily. I read some old threads about it and see the bolts are dealer only item but what about the little bolt on the starter? can I just hit the hardware store and if so anybody know what size it is?

got the bolts for $6.55 each from the dealership. I asked about the bolt for the support bracket and the diagram they printed for me shows a stud on the starter. that sucks, I was hoping to not have to take the starter out all the way.

Warranty the 2 month old starter. IMO it broke the stud rather than fell out. I doubt that's going to be fun to remove.

as it turns out i guess the stud vibrated out instead of broke. I had a bolt that fit those threads so I threaded it in and put a nut on the back like yall said. it fired right up like normal. I chased the threads in the block and got a lot more thread engagement there too. maybe itll hold for a while. speaking of threads I borrowed my neighbors tap, hes an airline mechanic, and that was the most bad ass tap ive ever used! I had a pos 4 flute tap and this was a 2 flute spiral tap. night and day difference. ill be saving up for a real tap set now. "emoge" or something is the brand name of them.

Glad no permanent damage occured. I'll second the call for some blue loctite on those threads.

On the spiral taps: they are work best for blind holes and for faster cutting. Used a lot in production. I love them when doing multiple holes.

Couple of draw backs- they break easily in chip-able materials like cast iron, cast aluminum, hard metals, plate thinner than the same diameter of the hole size.
Ever get a little crooked, and they break with half the force of a straight tap.

I have to throw a plug out here for Mac Tools. Their taps and dies are lifetime warranty against breakage (drill bits too).
I don't know of any other company that does that.

didn't know that. I have a buddy that drives a mac tool truck. ill be giving him a call!

If he doesnt know the drill bits and taps are lifetime, tell him to call corporate. Many guys dont know.

Many guys lie to their customers because they dont want the headache and increased operating cost of warranty those items.
The tool guy has to buy the new one from Mac, and pay for it. Then collects the brokens, ships them in on his dime, to get a credit a month or two after he has paid for it. So doing a warranty on tools costs him time and money all for the hope the customer will come back for more purchases.

If anyone can not get them replaced by the tool truck guy, call 1-800-mac-tool
At some point they may change the warranty, but for the last 25 years that I know of.
