Welcome to TTS. You've come to the right place, as there have been several HX40 builds here lately, here in the performance section. http://www.thetruckstop.us/forum/forums/6-5-performance.229/

Here are a few of the builds.

Welcome Codie. Spend some decent time reading here, the knowledge will save you lots of time and money. Yes hx40w is a good upgrade from stock. Depending what your doing with the truck, there is other things to do as well.

Well I have 2 6.5 diesels one is 97 1500 and that is the one I need to do turbo on. The other is a 95 2500 that's the one I would like to put about 5 to 10 thousand into. It is bone stock besides pmd module. Any suggestions for my 2500?

Hi Codie, welcome to TTS. The links that were given to you will have a lot of the information you're looking for as far as HX40s go. The closest to a bolt on will be to use one of the kits that ptwiringsolutions.com has. The other bolt on turbo is the A Team Turbo that leroydiesel.com sells. From what I've read, they're all great turbos for our trucks, you just have to match it to your application....and the best way to figure out what matches your truck is reading how the turbos reacted on other peoples' trucks/combos.

As far as the wired wastegate that you mentioned in your other post, it sounds like the previous owner was dealing with vacuum troubles. A quick fix for that would be a Turbo Master. When I first got my truck I solved my vacuum issues with a Turbo Master and got a tune to go with it. That change alone SIGNIFICANTLY changed the character of my truck. It made my truck work the way I felt GM should have from the factory.

Like Will said, most of the information you're looking for is in here, just spend some time reading and you'll pick up a lot of useful information. Learn from others' trials/mistakes/successes, it will reduce the amount of your time and money investment. :D

Where did u get your turbo master and tune for it at? I appreciate everyone that is helping me. Thank you so much everyone I know knows nothing about 6.5s and I have two

I got them at Heath Diesel.

Just throwing this in for your consideration http://leroydiesel.com/product-category/turbo/

But as an alternative, you could spend a little more now and bypass that step and step right up to the larger turbo and tune that Leroy is offering. It's all a matter of budget and goals.

For a dedicated tow rig, or one that sees lots of heavy towing, I personally reccomend the a team turbo that LEROY sells. It is not a wastegated turbo, and is matched to the 6.5's air requirements. It will be a little slower to build boost that some of the HX style turbos, but once the engine is in it's power band it will be right there on boost for you. For a daily driver it would be a toss up to me. The HX is going to give you quicker boost simply due to the fact it is a wastegated turbo, and dumps boost to keep boost down at upper RPM's whereas the ATT is matched to the engines air needs and doesn't need to dump boost. And despite what some will say, tuning plays a HUGE role in how the turbos work. If I was running a stock tune, or the tune that many here rave about, I would probably lean to the HX simply because they can cover for poor tuning and make the 6.5 run good with not ideal tuning. If your going to get a good tune, then I would go with the turbo that is matched to the engines airflow needs. And I believe the ATT is going to get the MPG edge as well since it will have lower drive pressures at cruise.

Don't buy a turbo master, big waste of money. Make your own, it's by far cheaper. Just do a search and you will find instructions on how to make one.

I did a while back when I had the stock turbo. I cut the top of the pressure pot off and tack welded all thread to the top of the existing rod. Added a spring and flat washer and nut. I don't have pics but a search should yield some results.

What you really need to do is list all the details of the truck, and what you want to do with it-high perf; playing off road; towing heavy; back and forth to work so economy only; etc. Also what budget, We all know limited funds but how limited makes a difference. If you take the time to do all this, then we can tell you all the stuff we've spent $ on so you get most bang for your buck. Knowing a 4" exhaust, but what cross over? etc. Do this for both your rigs.

If you can do an ATT turbo It will pay for itself in fuel savings and give you more power. If you don't have that cash then yes make your own tm. if you have to. Otherwise the factory vacuum system will be best for economy until you have to buy a new vacuum pump- then make a tm.

My 97 1500 is my wife's truck she wants a little power but mostly stock. My truck is bone stock its the 95 2500 only thing it has is aftermarket PMD module. I would be willing to spend 2 to 3 thousand on it just not all up front. But I don't want to install something that could damage it if another part is needed first. It will be my pulling truck but also I want it to have power that you can blow some coal. I have a single stack in the back going to but dual stacks it has 4" exhaust. Want to put cold air intake on it new bigger turbo. Gauges. Anything else that would help me let me know. Thank you for your time and patience. I have been searching different parts on here eBay heaths and Leroy's. Been reading forums on here and of coarse looking on YouTube.

Whoa stop right there. These 6.5s are not made to handle, "rolling coal". That will only waste fuel and possibly burn a hole through a piston.

For starters, do the 4" exhaust upgrade, that will allow the motor to breath and will allow for more power to be added.

Gauges, great idea. Boost, egt and fuel pressure or trans temp. Again depending on the trucks desired purpose will determine which gauges you should run. But at the very least boost and egt.

The '97 already has basically the best cold air intake, the "k47" air box. Don't ditch it!

Tunes are great for power too but not before a better turbo, imho. The stock turbo is very restricted to begin with and stock fueling is all that should be thrown at it.

That's all that comes to mind right now. Happy wrenching.

Thank I wasn't meaning rolling coal like newer diesels I was just meaning a little. On the 97 when I bought it the airbox was already replaced with aftermarket one K&N. They both already have 4" exhaust did that mydelf . now for the turbo on 97 I think I might go with Hx40 I am not going to be pulling with it I will be adding boost gauge, get, and trans temp on it but I thing after that I am done with it.

On my 97 when block heater is plugged in its in a garage but when I go to start it it nearly acts like a carbonated engine. Takes forever to start. Then after it has warmed up and I have drove it shut it off. Then go back to start it and its still warm it still barely wants to start. Is this my glow plugs or something else I need to check first.
