Under hood insulation?

Is the underhood insulation more for noise suppression than keeping the paint from getting to hot? I need to remove it because it is a acorn storage warehouse for mice/chipmonks. If I wanted a quiet truck an IDI diesel would not be my first choice. For some reason, my truck has become a mouse house in cab and under hood. Removing a food source seems to be a logical first step. None of my other old steel has this issue in the cab. Thanks

I removed the insulation on the hood of my last truck, it was a '95 C1500 with the 350. I never noticed anything happen to the paint (except for some A-hole who keyed it up while I was at work) so I think it's really only for noise suppression. I'm tempted to remove it all on my current truck, too. It's a little rough and won't be getting any nicer. Same with all the insulation on the firewall.

I put my fiberglass hood on about 10 or so years ago and it's never had any insulation on the underside. The paint is still perfect on both sides.

Its gone after this noreaster blows by in a few days. I'll have to lay a tarp over the engine bay to catch the acorns and assorted mouse houses in there.

Bought the Burb at 140Kmi and it did not have the hood insulation. 20K miles and a few years later, no noticeable issues.

Regarding the critters, see if you can talk the neighbor into getting a cat as chances are just removing the insulation will not completely discourage them from using the engine bay as refuge. Reason for asking the neighbor to get the cat is that you do not have to worry about solving the critter issue at the expense of your own furniture :hihi:

I used to have barn cats, but they became dinner for coyotes and owls. There is a hawk family managing the chipmonks for me, which I have mixed fellings on, cause I miss target practice. The mice I can almost deal with under the hood, except they need to stay out of my cab! I hope to weld in the rocker panel on the weekend and extended cab lower panel. I am pretty sure I solved where they enter cab, as the rubber boot that shields the door wire was off on the door side. from there they were running up the plastic interior panels and ate holes in headliner and carpet for nests. I have new interior to put in, but need to make sure they are kept out. Considering putting trail cam in cab first.
