Uncle Buck Sounds

So, I know my AC isn't healthy. This week, it started making the sound from the movie, "Uncle Buck" where the car sounded like a bomb falling and then detonated from the exhaust. It doesn't sound so good while under power and it's obvious when I shut off the AC.

My truck only makes the bomb whistle sound when I shut it off and walk away. If it blew up, that might be OK. Still...I'm presuming it's the compressor bypassing internal seals when de-powered and that it's life is short. Or am I wrong? Choices?
