I am in the process of buying a 5th wheel and noticed there are, at least, two types of mechanisms for the hitch. The clam shell seems to be popular and the Reese Pro Series rounded slide bar has been recommended by a dealer. I will be pulling 9800lbs with a pin weight of 1545lbs.

Is one preferred over the other? Does one lend itself to chucking more than the other?

Thanks, I am just trying to make a good purchase.

I like my Reese 16K square tube slider but wish I had gone with the round tube one instaed. I read they don't have as much play. If you don't want or need a slider The B&W turnover ball 5th wheel plate is really nice and only leaves one hole and you can put a plug in that when not in use.

I have the slide bar Reese 15K and I do notice a little slack in it but it does do the job and it's really easy to tell when it's locked.

Never heard of someone dropping a 5er with the slide bar but did have a camping buddy drop one with the jaws. Messed up his bed rails really bad.

my first 5vr was a reese 5th wheel only. My current is a b&w hidden hitch. great for clear bed when not towing, easy setup for gooseneck and accepts 5th wheel. granted removing and installing 5th wheel is a bit of effort, but 305 for hitch and 650 for 5th, good economicle sense if you don't have shortbed and need slider

I have the Super Glide hitch. More money but well worth it IMHO. Had it for 5 or 6 years now. Never a problem works as advertised and I wouldn't want to be without it.
