On my 98 suburban my when my turn signals are off and the emergency hazards are off it clicks like they are on. It has been intermittent but today it has been going on and off all day. A month or so ago after this problem started I needed to use my hazards and when I turned them off there was a little puff of smoke, the problem had been going on for a month or so prior to the puff of smoke. Any thoughts?

Are any of the lights coming on when it is happening?
Other than clicking is it working properly?
iirc there are 2 round flasher cans,
Maybe remove the flasher cans 1 at a time to see which circuit and possibly swap them around to see if the flasher is bad.

There may be some breakers in the turn signal area. They usually don't cycle that fast, but, being old and worn out they may. Maybe some relays in the area or the "buzzer" for lights on seat belt etc. may be acting up. Be careful as breakers get damn hot! I suggest probing them with an IR temp gun first before touching them. Absolutely isolate what box the clicking is coming from. If you can't find it disconnect the batteries till you can so it doesn't burn down. Smoke is a warning something bad is wrong... Some LED or trailer compatible flasher units can do weird things.

For a 98 I believe they went back to 1 main turn signal flasher relay. I know my 95 has 2, the hazzard flasher down in the panel by your left foot, and the turn signal flasher behind the dash near the ashtray atatched to a tab on the steel cross bar. They don't fail often, but you may have lost the multifunction switch in the column if some smoke came out of it.

Thanks guy's! Sorry I haven't posted since my original post. I posted it thinking I had time before vacation to look at it. Unfortunately I didn't. Just got back from vacation and its time to track down the culprit. Something else that I just noticed that could be part of the problem is the dome light. It works when I manually turn it on but when I open the doors it doesn't.
