We just replaced the heads on my dads 94 GMC 2500 4x4 auto. trans. The truck runs very smooth and quite but for some reason when we test drove it the turbo constanly is whining. We are use to hearing this noise when its pulling a big load but thats the only time we hear it. We looked into the waste gate controler and vacume by making sure the waste gate is free and operates smooth with the engine off. Also checked the vacume by watching the controler open the wategate on start up and tried to move the arm and its very ridged. From what I have read this is all good. There is no check engine light that comes on. While we had the turbo off dring the head job we checked the bearings for play and they felt good. Just feeling un easy about the whining anytime you touch the throtle. Any Ideas???

Sounds like you might not have the intake elbow on all the way or some other 'open' source pre turbo.

If that's all good, I'm going with quieter engine so now you can hear the turbo....like he said:iagree:

replace my 4 with an 8, major difference, whining most of the time, quicker spool, I would not see a problem.

air filter put on correctly? any smoke? if not and still concerned, put a boost gauge in, sounds like a good excuse to.

We are going to make sure that everything is tight at the turbo and make sure gaskets are all in the right places. Thanks for all your help. I dont think that there is a major problem since the check engine light is not on.

I hate to say this, but changing the heads isn't going to make the engine quiet enough to suddenly hear turbo whine.

Do you have a boost gauge? What is your boost at?

While we're tossing ideas, can you fill out your signature so we know more about your truck? If it is an 'F' VIN, then having your lines on the wastegate solenoid wrong will cause this issue... it only checks in one direction.

I'm thinking you might have the vacuum hoses on wrong, and are getting vacuum at the turbo at all times.
