I have a gm4 turbo on the engine right now, I noticed today that there is oil leaking from the Exhaust manifold, and I removed the intake hose and it is coated in a film of oil.

In your experience is it just the seals or should I be looking for a new turbo before the engine swallows pieces of it?

Now I'm not going to get an ATT, I don't pull anything but the utility trailer with my Harley's on it, and my wife has become addicted to the instant whistle with her lead foot on the floor. Is there a difference between the GM1, GM4, GM8? If there is which one shoves the most amount of air into the engine. Like my SIG says I'm never done with the mods, I have save some cash to do other mods to it but I'm worried about the turbo now.

All and any input is appreciated. I like to weigh all my options first, and then make a decision.

Gm8 flows the best but oil in your intake tube is most likely from your cdr valve not the turbo oil seals. if you want to see the condition of your turbo oil seals look for how much oil is in the downpipe.

GM8 has the best flow, it's the newest version. The wastegate is vertical instead of horizontal.

This kind of oily hose is mostly the results of a clogged CDR valve rather than a blown seal...
Is it really so oily ? Pics ?

GM1 and GM4 (GM-5 ?), IIRC have a less efficient exhaust elbow (GM4 Is for Van, isn't it ?)
GM-8 is the latest design and is said to create less backpressure than former ones

ATT is a winner, a puller, but not a good whistler

Wouldn't a clogged CDR, NOT allow oil to pass into the turbo?

I've always had some oil in the tube from the CDR as well as on the compressor housing. Even after a brand new one. I thought people here said that that is what it's supposed to do?

Check out our new ATT with whistle upgrade. Comes with a deer whistle that you mount on the frame right under the driver. Whistles like crazy.

I don't need my wife to attract any more wildlife (for some reason when my wife is driving the deer come to the road.), the visor is no longer attached to the roof in the middle thanks to some prairie chickens she scared up out of the ditch.

Thanx for the heads up on the CDR.

There's just enough oil to make the dirt stick to the manifold, and after a short run across town I can smell hot oil. The guy I bought it(the Tahoe) from said that the CDR sticks about once a yr. He said that would just removed it cleaned it and reinstalled it.

No pic for this problem, it's gotta be the CDR. GM4 is what's on the Tahoe right now, but I've found a few other things that were not original (rear end is from a light truck 10bolt), found this out when I went to replace the brake pads and they wouldn't fit. I've been told diesel's and Z71's came with the 14 bolt. A previous owner seemed to like going to the wreckers and finding what ever would fit. :mad2:

Good to hear that the GM8 is the better one, got a line on one from a former parts shop gone bust and now just getting rid of old stock. Might get it cheap.

I read up on the ATT, it seems to be more for pulling heavy, and I don't do that, I would have bought a truck for that. I don't want to mess with changing the head bolts to studs just yet. I wouldn't trust the stock bolts to take the pressure from not having a waste gate. Trying to save up for ALL cooling upgrades first.

Or that contraption that installed in your tailpipe and spins/whistles, from the exhaust pressure.

I'm pretty sure every F**D diesel has one of those installed, they make a lot of noise but can't pull the 2000# doghouse (auto tranny) for the rig. Sorry I'm wrong, it will move the dog house in 4LO and in first gear (just barely).

no ford diesels just have 10 blade compressors on there turbos that whistle like crazy. the fact that there running 20+ psi helps too.

I've come to the conclusion that F^%D's just noise makers, that get 6.5 miles/ imperial gallon. Got 3 of them one for each service rig to pull the dog house and like I said before, 4lo in first gear, and they really struggle to get moving. It's like the kids toy whistle is mounted in the tailpipe instead of a turbo to boost the engines power, I think the automatic trannies really hinder the performance too. Got stuck with the new one in an inch of mud because the computer wouldn't let the wheels spin. :mad2:
