The heat shield is missing on my Tahoe, no biggie right? Well that was what I thought until I spotted all but one of the heat shield installation bolts are snapped off flush in the turbo body ARRRG! :mad2:

I am not going to run without a heat shield, been informed (thanks Barry) that operating without the turbo heat shield can blister the paint off the hood. It has already started melting the insulation off the underside of the hood above the turbo. That will be enough of that! :nonod:

Anyone have any feed back using one of these heat blankets in place of the metal turbo heat shield? :???:

Lookie here>>>http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/T4-Turbo-Blanket-Heat-Shield-Black-Free-Spring-clips-NR-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem483d427933QQitemZ310265411891QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

That's way cheaper than the raw materials kit I got at Baxter's Auto Parts (local shop). You'll need it, I damaged my radiator surge tank running a couple of years without one. The ATT runs cooler than a stock turbo but not cool enough when pulling heavy for many miles. Now I'm insulating everything from the air filter box to the AC accumulator. Many little things...

Do any of you know if the one in the link would fit my GM-4?

It should as the circumfrence is 22" which is about 7" in diameter. Front side of my GM-5 is 6" and the ATT is 7" and IIRC, the exhaust side isn't as large.
Plus, unless I'm really mistaken, it only really needs to cover the top anyway.

One of my bolts on my old engine was rotted into the turbo housing, but it has 3 bolts totla iirc, even with two it should be sturdy enough for what its gotta do.

I have been searching the net to gain experiences using these blankets...most recently discovered on a cummins forum that the blanket was believed to be increasing EGT's and that possibly could also be cooking the oil flow through the turbo by using one of these blankets???

I can drill out the top bolt hole for the OEM cover and maybe the side one if I pull the turbo or the inner wheel well. Might just drill out the top bolt & use 2 bolts for installation of the OEM cover & get creative for the last bolt to secure the cover.

It normally only takes me a few negative issues to be reported about something aftermarket to turn me off...

I appreciate all the feedback...

I believe you will probably see an increase of EGTs, as long as you monitor your EGTs post turbo, in the down pipe. If you monitor pre-turbo, I don't see any reason why the blanket would increas EGT.

EGTs will be higher in the downpipe with the blanket setup, as heat can't escape in engine bay, so it has to go somewhere. That should make the turbine working hotter, but with good turbos and good engine oil, cooking oil shouldn't be an issue
