Another bad situation with the stupid TTY head bolts. Put new gaskets and bolts on the flatbed in Aug. 2 weeks ago started going thru coolant again.(in the oil) I knew excactly where to go because the pass side didn't "feel" right wheen I put them in. Tried Missy's way and could only get about 80 Ft-lbs on the center 2 top bolts. Said it'll be fine. WRONG. So 3.5 months later doin it again. Advance was pretty good about it warrentied the bolts and gasket but couldn't get anything for labor, coolant, flush, etc., but $45 is $45. SO leason learned if it dont "feel" right when you torque em down pull em and take them back......

Eliminate that problem. ARP head studs. Besides being a far superior fastener, they are reusable. I won't use the tty bolts. According to bill heath ,the tty bolts are the leading cause of head gasket failure. They won't retain their torque with the heat and vibration. ARP are american made. Do you know where your tty bolts came from?

They are Fel-Pro. I would guess the had to swim to get here. I thought about going with studs but Advance wouldn't give me the money instead of bolt kit so I'll try them again. I would have to agree 110% will Heath on that one too.

I understand that money is tight for some people, but dang, that's
a lot of work to go through again to save a couple hundred bucks.
They failed once, and you're gonna try them again?

You've got the receipt, right? Get the replacements from Advance,
go to a different branch and return them, tell em you don't need em
anymore and get your money back :D

Yep thought of all that but with snow on the ground and phone ringing for plow jobs had to get her up runnin asap. Used the bolts again but they felt alot better than the first time so I'll wait and see. Studs or regular bolts are definatly the way to go though if time and $$$$ are on your side.

Usually head bolts have a shoulder on the shank that centers the bolt in the head, also some are necked down in the middle as well. Can't use regular bolts in place of head bolts as grade 8 isn't good enough to withstand the heat & forces for very long.
