I have installed my gauge pod & have my boost & EGT temp hooked up & working, but have not installed the temp probe for trans yet. I thought there was a plug on the trans somewhere that could be pulled to insert the probe? I looked before asking this question here, but did not see anything obvious on the trans?

Actually being that my truck is a daily driver, I'm kinda thinking now that maybe a fuel pressure gauge in the place of the trans temperature maybe more valuable then the trans temp indication???

I rarely tow anything other then a couple times a year, my trucks primary use is too & from work about 100 miles daily.

TIA,

You could mount it in the drain plug, or like me, put it on the right side towards the rear of the pan. There were alot of things protruding close to the edge of the pan along the valve body, as well as shift linkage and the front drive shaft- which necessitated it going there (for my piece of mind).

I am a big fan of that gauge- especially now in the crazy summer heat. I have been surprised at how quickly it heats up in 90-100 degree heat with a light trailer load. It's SCARY... and my fluid/filter is just replaced.

I believe there is a plug you can pull to insert the probe. Someone told me about it, but I am not sure exactly where. Perhaps someone can chime in.

if you look up over top of the neutral safety switch there is a pipe plug there, a lil tough to get to on the ground but completely doable. thats where i put my probe at.

I dont have a 4l80e, but if you look at this pic, below the sticker the second boss down has a plug in it- this looks like the plug I pull to install a sensor on my 4L60e trans. If its 1/8 pipe thread the sensor would screw tight in.

The pressure port you are refering to won't give a accurate temp reading for the fluid since there isn't any circulation to the pressure port. Pan is best.

I have a boss on my PML pan where probe is threaded in, from all I've been led to believe pan temp is what needs to be monitored. FWIW with my extra cooler, & deep pan, trans never sees above 200F even towing 18K loaded gn trailer on a hot day.

PCM sensor is attached beside the valve body which is located in the sump/trans pan area.

Trans shop used a heat reading gun on the cooler lines and the pan to verify my gauge was working properly. It was dead accurate. Sadly it was accurate at 240 degrees just before being pulled for a rebuild. They run 220 degrees with a load and aux air to oil cooler added on.

I just pulled the probe to move to my replacement truck and it was mounted in the plug location. Quick dirty and accurate - better than not having one.

Have a pan under the trans because oil will drip out of the plug when you are not looking...
