I had my tranny rebuilt around 30,000 miles ago, so Its time to drop the pan, change the filter. I'd like to replace it with AMSOIL from Wrecker.

I'm not going to flush, just drain, drop, clean, replace filter, and refill.

What other additives do you guys recommend? I've heard good things about the GM additive. I'm going to toss one of those in, anything else?

Also, how much ATF should I get from Wrecker? I'm going to get an extra quart or 2 just to have on hand incase I need to add in the future.

I understand I will have a mix of old/dino ATF, and new Amsoil Synthetic ATF. This doesn't worry me. Should it?

The trans flush is very easy and I think you will see more benifit from the amsoil if you do it. I would skip the additives, the amsoil will have everything in t you need.

As far as compatibility there is no issue, and additives are completely unnecessary.

+1

Additives are completely necessary. A multibillion dollar business.

Uh, did you mean to post 'completely UN-necessary'?

If so, then you, Ashton, and I completely agree on this one... good fluids have everything you need built-in, right from the bottle. Adding potentially harmful Wal-Mart stuff, do-nothing crap like Slick50, or out-and-out scam additives like MonsterDiesel is completely un-necessary!

Heath sells a GM automatic trans friction modifier.

"This is the stuff GM installed in your 4L80E from the factory"

Is it that this is really not necessary, or that newer fluids contain the equivalent

This is a rather broad statement. If it's true then we don't need to add oil to diesel to compensate for low sulfur?

LOL... yeah, I am being broad with that one, sorry - I was just reading all the hype about Monster Diesel and was disgusted that people were being hustled into trying anything containing cyclic aromatics, especially on diesel websites whose FIRST task should be to protect their members... people will do anything for money, I guess. It's a buyer-beware world.

Rant over...

Fuel Treatments: I use 30wt ND motor oil in my diesel (every tank) as well as a regular dose of PS or Howe's for stabilization plus 4 x /year treatments of biocide to keep my tanks all spanky. Fuel is a different game...

Same with coolant. I use Redline water-wetter for the surfactant properties and increased inter-surface transfer rates, along with Prestone antifreeze for corrosion protection, increases thermal carrying capacity, boiling pt modulation, and of course (this is Canada, after all) to prevent freeze-ups.

But I never regularly add (not treat, but add) anything to my lubricants. I use quality stuff to begin with, and have never felt the need to augment it with slick50, Rislone, compression-in-a-can, liquid teflon, etc. I've got a little 93 Toyota 4x4 that's had Synthetic Oil and tranny fluid in everything since day 1. It has almost 650,000 km on it with nothing but routine maintenance - my little brother is still driving it daily.

(of course, the fenders, box, bumpers, door panels, cab corners, etc have all rusted into spiderwebs, but the drivetrain, glass and rubber are all still ok :D)

Hope that's more clear. I agree with GenBiltstein.. there's a multi-billion dollar industry in additives, dedicated to separating suckers from their wallets on additives they don't need.

If Ashton says you don't need additives with Amsoil TF, then you can take that to the bank.

IMHO, of course, which is worth exactly what you just paid for it :)

Not harm meant. I was just making sure no one was asleep at the switch.

In Canada do you have constant concern with algae growing in your fuel tank? "x /year treatments of biocide to keep my tanks all spanky"

I have used fuel well over 10 years old. I started a crawler once by pulling it with a tractor as we were bleeding the air and freeing up the IP rack. The fuel smelled like varnish. It would almost give you a head ache. But.... it started and ran. We eventually diluted it with new fuel, but never drained it. I've never seen a growth in a fuel tank, that's why I ask.

I've never had a colony in mine, but I have seen one, a long time ago when I was driving big rigs (an old Maxidyne - tells you how young I am)... nasty, nasty stuff. Like Mouldy jello with floaties... We tossed out the tanks, the lines, the filters, the filter managers, and had the IP torn down and cleaned. Truck was a slimy mess. Just when you would think you had the crap out, you would get another hunk of snot out of some little nook. Was just easier to start over.

So, I add biocide every so often just to make sure. Probably un-necessary, too, but I've never had another case of algal bloom in my tanks... which proves nothing, but makes me feel better.

Fuel and lubricants are two completely different animals, especially since the ULSD change. I do recommend a fuel additive, I do not recommend an additive for lubricating oil, trans or hydraulic fluid.

Algae is definitely a concern with fuel system health.

Any links to info on how to do this transflush?

Also Anyone recommend a good biocide? I want to nuke my rear tank before putting it back to service again. (again) I have a thing of Sea Foam in there for the last 3 weeks. Thinking of dumping a thing of ATF in there for a week or 2 before returning it back to service to help clean it up. I ran a few tank fulls last year from it, including some B100 in a 5% mix, (B20) so It may be pretty clean by now in that plastic tank, but want to nuke the BIO just in case.

Matt, on another post on this BB someone mentioned "Bio-con" as a highly recommended algae fixer. If you do a google search of that product perhaps they make one for your situation.
