Hey all. I just got home from a ride up to Hatchers pass, which is a state park here in AK (ak diesel driver knows where I am talking about). You are basically going up into the mountains with very steep roads (20-30 degree). When I stopped at the top and got out, I smelled hot tranny fluid, also while ascending the mountain, my oil pressure was reading about 20psi instead of the normal 35-40psi. I drove in 3rd gear, not overdrive and the tranny was rebuilt about 2 years ago. Do you think that my tranny just got hot from the steep hills? I will check tomorrow to see if maybe I have fluid leaking and possibly burning on the exhaust. And while descending, the oil pressure went back to normal. Weird. Thanks for any ideas.

It sounds like you did not have your torque converter locked. When it is unlocked and climbing up steep inclines it will make the fluid hot.

Do you have a gauge? If so how hot did she get?

No, I do not have a gauge yet. I was traveling about 35mph up the hills. Should I have used 2nd gear instead? Would the converter lock-up switch mod help me here?

Steve

15-40 Oil is the normal stuff recommended for the 6.5.

Hard pulls will heat the stuff up and the pressure will drop off.

Your electric gauge reading may be skewed a bit too.

If the truck has had a replacement engine installed (Squirt block) these are noted for dropping pressure when hot and pulling.

High miles will see bearing wear and along with this comes oil loss.

Use 15-40 Delo or 15-40 Rotella T oil and ad a can or STP with the oil change.

This will help measurably with that pressure drop thing.

These engine produce a lot of heat and along with that heat goes thining of the oil.
The small amount of oil that the crankcase holds (9 qts) also makes it tough to cool it down easily.

Your turbo bearing (Bushing) may be getting worn some and allowing more leakage than normal too.

Try installing a T fitting in the oil pressure port and installing a mechanical gauge to compare things with.

Or try installing a fresh OPS (sending unit)

These units get tired over time and will get hinky.

AFAIK, the engine is original. The coolant temp was at 195-200f the whole time and I had just changed my oil with 8qts delvac 1300. The op switch is new also. I was wondering if my oil pump was cavitating at that angle, causing the lower pressure.

I pulled the radiator this spring and cleaned the #@%& out of it. Coolant temp is around 195-205f. While the rad was out, I also sprayed the oil cooler and condensor.

was the OP needle steady or jumping around a little ?

Weird thing is, when I started back down the road, op came back to normal. Truck was only shut down for maybe 15 min.
