Trailer Widths

I am looking for overall width measurements of actual trailers. (not just what they are supposed to be) I have seen some that are over 102" wide. Is more than 102" allowed to the outside of the fender or tires?

I found this:

"There are 15 states that allow only 8'0" trailer width, but federal rules dictate that 102". or 8'6" is the national size limit, so interstate highways in all states are 8'6". This means that some roads in some states have 8' limits. You can buy the "Motor Carrier's Road Atlas" at any truck stop to see a map of roads in all states that have width restricted to 8".

Not sure how official that is though...

I just called a local trailer manufacturer and they said it is 103 outside to outside of the fenders.
I am wondering how many trailers are over the limit. Almost every one I have measured is over. Several 104+ and the widest I came across is 106".
These are all factory made trailers.

I sure wouldn't be laying my money down without knowing the skinny on this width issue.
I wonder why so many are already over the national limits? That would have to cut into sales bigtime.

If it was me I'd stick to the 102" width. Every state around you has that requirement so you're good in all of them.

So has anyone measured there trailers? My trailer is 104-1/2" wide that I have had for years. Never knew it was that wide till today when I measured it.
There is apparently some loophole in the law or something since 103" allowed according to the trailer mfg.

I know our horse trailer is 102" wide, according to the door placard. I wouldn't buy one bigger than that, or you might have fun explaining that to a state trooper somewhere...

Some goosnecks I've been looking at have a deck width of 8'6".

I need a 8 ft width at minimum, cutting it close for me.
