I seriously don't know. My manual must be a miss print or something is wrong. I was going through and my truck is only rated for like 7500 pounds and thats it. Its a dually I see guys hauling 35' trailers no problem with the 2001. Is my manual wrong? How many pounds is your truck rated for, mines on 75 as i said.

Nope, you are probably right. The tree hugger rated tow rating for the 6.5TD is way lower than what some people have towed with it.

Wait to you find out it only has 195 HP :)

Matt look at the torque. The big rigs on have 210 Hp and pull 30,000 ibs no problem

Yeppers, I agree. Was just a joke i guess that wasn't funny.

I guess they also have 9,11, or 15 speed trannsmissions (manual's). Wonder what rear-end gear ratio's the big-boys run.

it all depends on how the truck was "ordered" back in 2000.. mine was ordered with a 10k gvw rating, but DRW trucks start at 7k and go up to 12k gvw.. and more so when ordering packages for combined gvw while pulling, but like i said.. all depending on how deep the original owners pocket was who "ordered " the truck..

im quoting "ordered" cause sometimes the dealers order them like that for thier inventory.. dealer incentives and package deals according to lots( 1k-10k trucks per lot) sold per region, per quota, per quarter, past sales histories and future estimations are put into consideration.... sounds confusing.. i know... ever seen a dually WITHOUT a tow receiver under the bumper.. i have...

buyers just assume.. a dually is a dually.. but not so.. the dealers use toooo many tricks.. but anyway.. thats another topic

and by the way...
the mack tandem, day cab i use to have, grossed at 80k, had 205hp, 13 speed fuller, and a 3.23 rear, the fullers first gear was 16 to 1

Trapp they are seriously hampered from factory, remember even dually 6.5s are still classed light duty Diesels, they can be made to net more, but requires stuff in my signature or variant of that to get there and remain relaible mile after mile.

up to 18 speed double overdrive trans and could still put a old style 3 speed brownie (low/direct/overdrive) trans, 3.73 to 4.11 for over the road and 4.11 and lower for short haulers.

My truck's got a whopping 165hp(6.2) and according to the numbers I shouldn't even be able to move the truck never mind tow

FWIW a stock mustang 5.0 from the 80's also have numbers similar for HP. We just get so used to hearing 300HP, 350HP, that we naturally laugh at anythign close to 200.

Thats still a LOT of horses! I actually think 200 horses could pull my truck backwards in a pull-off!

Anyone have a few hundred extra horses to try?

Name of the came is getting those horses to the ground and most of our trucks do that quite well, I have towed a lot more than my truck was supposed to be able to without trouble. The key is liability, the auto companies don't want to have a law suit. And some owner / operators don't know their equipments limitations, that is key, knowing your safety limits.

:iagree: power is nothing if you can't get it to the pavement):h. and yes there are plenty of stupid people who still think that it's always somebody else's fault.:mad2:

newer fleet trucks are running 3.08, 2.93, etc. with LP 22.5 tires and direct transmissions. direct 1-1 ratio is the most efficient, so running small tires for less weight and rolling resistance, and a high geared rear end to make up for no OD, and a direct tranny for efficiency. also running at least 425 HP all the way up to 625HP. (may be 650)

but that is on highway fleet. here in farm country 3.55-4.11 is the norm, with 11Rx22.5- 11Rx24.5 for rubber, and most trucks are old enough 300-500 HP is the norm. also, we don't take kindly to no OD, so 13, 15, and 18 speed is common. (dad has a 84 Peterbilt 362 COE Single axle that has a semi-rare 13 speed RTOO fuller (quantity 3 overdrive ratios))

but back on topic...:)...tow ratings are really conservative for liability reasons, and some ratings are limited by one part in the powertrain. in my brochure for my 95 C3500HD, it is limited to 19K combo. I have found out that the NV4500LD is rated to only 19K combo. We all know that a 6.5L or 7.4L engine can motivate a NV4500 equipped C3500HD with a gooseneck way past 19K combo, but to preserve warranty, one had to stay below 19K.

Tow ratings USED to be conservative for liability reasons, until the tow rating became just another selling point for light duty pickups, same as horsepower and everything else. Now it has become a major battle among manufacturers who want to be able to say they have the highest tow rating. So they are no longer afraid to put a big number on it if it sells trucks. It's actually gotten pretty ridiculous of you ask me.

If a new Ford or Toyota half ton can tow 10,000 lbs, then my 1 ton damn sure can.
