Torquing the HB

Trying to torque the HB bolt to 200 ft lbs. I'm using a ratchet strap on the HB to the steering cross member to stop it from spinning. This worked taking the old one off which had slight surface rust, but the new one is just spinning under strap as I try to torque it on.

Suggestions welcome.

I think there is also the inspection cover that drops down easily also. It wont come off completely, but may lower enough to get a prybar in there. May be easier than pulling the starter due to that damn brace.

Guys, this is all new territory for me. Inspection cover?

How about bolting some flat bar stock to 2 of the pulley bolt holes on the HB and having it of sufficient length that it goes through the large hole in the frame cross member directly below the HB?

back side of the motor/trans. near the starter. you will be able to see the converter and the fly wheel. comes completely off with a hand full of bolts

I got it. I put the strap hook on the spoke of the HB instead of the strap around it. I got my first mashed finger in this project. Just a flesh wound.

I trick I learned from the Mini guys, use an old main or rod bearing on the flywheel or flex plate teeth. No need to pull the starter, just the inspection cover. A bearing is soft enough to not hurt the teeth, but strong enough to keep the crank from turning.

perhaps a piece of lead would work well too? As to not damage the teeth, and stop the flywheel? Think a wedge of wood would work? or too soft? Oak?

I just rattle the bolt with my 1/2 inch impact for about 3 seconds and its good to go.

Use a little blue loctite on the threads, good to go.

About the only place I use a torque wrench any more are the head bolts, Rods and mains

Everything else is with a wratchet or an impact, zooooooop all done.

Since its Missy giving this advice, take it. I sure will when I change mine out.

MGW, how much psi does your 1/2 impact run off of?

Just be aware all impacts are not created equal some as low as 200ftlbs-500ftlbs

 Too little TQ and it comes loose. Bad. Using an impact… The bearings have no oil in them. Rattling the engine with an impact causes the weaker gas engines, LS2, to spin a rod bearing. This is what we have been seeing, engine failures, shortly after putting on under drive pulleys over on the LS2 forum. More or less tracked down to the Spun #6 and under drive put on with an impact X miles ago…

 Even the thought of that is enough for me to go back to the inspection cover/wedge/prybar method.....

Well, the winch strap in the spoke of the HB worked just fine, though the "S" hook on the strap is a little tweaked.:rolleyes5:
