Hi all,

I remarked a noise today that makes me anxious:

after a drive, when I stop and put in Neutral, can heard a kind of "hydraulic noise" with small vibrations, e.g. same as a power steering pump under load...

Then, when I engage Rear, from P or from N, I can hear a growl which seems to come from under. This happens each time i go from N or P to rear. This growl last 1 second or 2 then disappear.
If i go on D from N or P, this happens too, but a lot quicker, less than half a second.

Trans fluid is OK, the 4L80E shifts flawlessly, no slipping...

Is that the sign of a trans converter quitting?

Same thing in my 01' suburban. Been that way last 20,000 miles but getting worse in the last 5,000. This is my ignore it and see if it goes away truck, so I haven't checked anything on it yet, if mine lets go before you get it figured out, I'll let you know what parts fell out.

Should be able to pull the converter and you will see a series of bolts in a circle. Remove the bolts and the pump comes out. May have to drop the pan as a believe the filter and a hard line plugs in the bottom. Been awhile since I pulled one and I believe it was a 700r4. I would think a 4l80e is similar.

How long has it been going on? I am not into trannys. I rebuilt a couple years ago with an instruction manual, and learned I don't ever want to do that again. Not hard just annoying and a boat load of specialty tools.

My theory on this suburban is abuse it, but I don't know if pushing the trans like this could turn a rebuild-able unit into scrap metal. Any experts been through this, can he just keep running it like me? I've got 186,000 on it no fluid or fiter changes in the tranny that I can remember...

Thanks Chevypoor ;)

Will, this just starting to show this week, and it seems to worsen pretty quick.

The growl did appear clearly yesterday evening. I haven't used the Blazer today.

We will pull out the engine probably next week (sold it), so that is the opportunity to change the tranny pump...

I have rebuilt a 700r4... 300-400$ if you buy all the specialty tools. I bought none of them. Made my own press to compress the clutches. If I had to do it again I would buy the $160 press. Pulling the pump is relatively easy. Hard part is finding just the pump gasket. It comes in the reman kit. Found mine at a tranny parts supply house. Good luck... pickup a tranny manual and i say go for it.

I meant a transmission manual, not a manual trans. :) Check out transmissioncenter.net they have a lot of info and a lot of parts.

Yes ak, selling my Teds...

The customer was on my back after seeing the Ted's engine ... However, he offered me a very good price + exchange with his rebuilt 506 + a brand new 5521-S.. and I need money :rolleyes5:

Daughter's university is very expensive...

You could be onto a neat side job as a military engine importer for your island... Hmmm..

or a big headache.. Lol

I see you found the website! Lots of info there...

Not sure which one I would recommend. From reading the description I would say the more pricey one since it appears to have a blead valve if the pressure gets to high. You could always call and see what those guys have to say. I would love to have one of there Raptors behind the ol 6.5. I know from gas motors having a properly set up tranny is a beautiful thing.

By the way, any idea why the growl is so stronger/longer in time when shifting in reverse, and just noticeable/quick when shifting to D?

More pressure in reverse.

I rebuild the odd trans and its not for the faint of heart, you miss one check ball or spring and game over. To get the pump out, you need a few tools as its seated in pretty good. Been awhile since I rebuilt a 4L80E but they are basically a 400 with an added 4th gear. One of the assembly's is held down with a hollow bolt, if you don't torque it properly it breaks, ask me how I know, lol.

In my youth I worked at AAMCO transmission as an R and R mechanic, the guys who did the rebuilds worked in a separate room with A/C and kept immaculate. I wouldn't even attempt to repair or rebuild at my house.
