Diesel shop has severe concerns about turning up the pump due to it possibly being the last straw on an old pump and pushing it to complete failure.

Again the IP stalls the engine returning to idle so it has some internal issues already. Discussed elsewhere here.

I am interested in a discussion on the risks of turning up the 'old' pump 1/4 turn. Would it hit a different unworn area of the plungers causing a hangup from a wear ridge? Like a cylinder ring ridge?

I plan on a SS Diesel turbo back 4" exhaust as the only performance mod. Cooling system upgrade as well...

New injectors are being put in FWIW.

Humm interesting, my truck had 205,000 on the original DB2 when i turned it up 1/3 turn. After about 6 months it resumed it's hot start issue but ran a heck of a lot better with more power. I didn't see any new issues after turning it up, and i ran it that way for about 18 months.)

Sounds to me like you have nothing to loose if the IP is already having issues. I was having the hard to start when hot issue all the time....it would never start when hot after sitting more than 20 minutes or so without pouring a bottle of water over the IP. It had 165k miles on it when I turned up my db2 1/4 turn (about 25k miles ago). It was recommended by one of the 6.5 experts from 'the place' that is here now (IIRC). I turned the pump up hoping to extend the life of the IP a little longer.....well, so far I've gotten over 25k miles on it. One time while towing heavy a couple of months ago(when the weather was still hot) it did the old hard to start when hot routine again. I'm looking for another IP now.

I say go for it....as long as you have big exhaust and free flowing intake, you'll notice a pretty good jump in power....if you don't have them all you'll get is black smoke and high EGTs. :D
