I was at a Pic a Part bone yard waiting in line to pay for my bounty. Latino guy ahead of me had a shopping cart full of stuff, including a Holset turbo that I of course started playing with. It was tight and the guy saw me playing with it and asked "you think it's good? I paid $50 for it." Well we got to talking and this guy is a professional salvager who hits all the yards in SoCal and sells the stuff in Mexico. The Holset was for a '93 2500 with 6.5TD which he had out in the parking lot. So we went to take a look:

Never seen a mechanical injection pump 6.5 TD. This one had a Borg Warner turbo on it that I've never seen before. It was a salvaged truck, heavily worn. He had done a jury rigged oil line repair. He had a K&N Filter but with no airbox around it. I told him to go with the '97 and later K47 airbox and he said that he had one. Also said he had just salvaged and sold a '97 Dmax engine that had 35K miles on it for $2,500. I took his number down as this guy obviously gets around and is focused on the diesel trucks.

'97 dmax engine? did they even exist then?

That truck right there just has the stock turbo on it, nothing special.

If that was a 1993, wouldn't that NOT be the stock turbo? I thought the GM-3 had the spring pressure canister on the wastegate. Not whatever is hooked up there

i have a 92 and its a gm1 turbo the tag says. they didn't run the waste gate like that till the gm8 i believe. mine is down on the side so was my 95

Must be replacing the turbo cus it doesn't work. No vacuum on the 1993 to hold that wastegate closed... Wrong turbo waste gate can for the year.

Based on all the issues I saw, he wasn't wise enough about these engines to even know about vacuum operated wastegate. He just thought the Holsett might give him more power.
