I think I would like to get a 6.2, but have some questions. What kind mph would I likely see in a early to mid 80 s 3/4 ton 4x4? Did they offer a manual in those year of trucks? Are they pretty easy to wrench on. I appreciate the info.

I'm gonna assume you meant MPG? 15 is about average. I've seen a few manuals out the, you'll end up with a 3+low setup. as far as wrenching on, you've got miles of space and simple design. don't expect them to be a big powerhouse though. HP was 135-165. make sure to check this out.

you don't have to worry about the PMD stuff(doesn't apply) but it's good info.

if you can understand an older gasser(AKA still has a carburetor), these are about the same difficulty.

If you meant MPH it will do about 65 max without OD. unless it has a TH700r4. I "think" only the 1/2 ton and K5's came with the 700 and the 3/4 ton-1ton and burbs came with TH400. My old Burb did about 65 max without really pushing the old nag.

The only reason it should be getting the low MPGs of 15, would be if it was one of the military trucks with the 4.56 or whatever it was gearing. That would give them low top speed and MPG, but good power to the ground. Otherwise in regular passenger trucks people saw more like 25mpg with the NA 6.2s from what I have read.

Only the ones with the TH700r4. The TH400 3/4 ton and 1 ton models sucked. 15 is about right. That is all my burb got.

So putting a beefed up 4L60E or the 4L80E behind an NA 6.2 with 3.42 or 3.73 gears and should do alright with fuel mileage. I think in the past you may have even been able to get 3.08 gears as an option on NA trucks. 3.42 works for me.

my 6.2 Blazer has 3.08s in it. I can squeeze 20-22 mpg out of it, and that's with no overdrive(SM465). When it had the 700R4 it got closer to 25, even with a shot trans.

or better yet an NV4500...That is my dream find for my CUCV. A GV would work too but as pricey as a 4l80e conversion.

My '87 with 4.10 and th400 gets 18mpg summer and about 14-15 winter. Those #'s are approximate but i do my mileage at the same time as I do my taxes and I get abou 16.5mpg over the course of a year. I can and do bury the needle on occasion (85mph). Flat grround to slight incline. The engine is just howling when I do tho and I'm sure I've hit the governor. It also takes a while to get there. The good thing is when i do take my foot off the pedal, the fuel gauge hasn't moved. Any 305 or 350 I've driven would have lost an 1/8th of a tank.

I thought I just posted this so if repetitive just ignore.

My '87 3/4 ton with 4.10 and th400 gets about 18mpg summer and 14-15 winter. I do my mileage when I do my taxes and over the course of a year I get about 16.5mpg average. I can also bury the needle (85mph) and the best thing is that the fuel gauge doesn't move. Any small block I've driven would use an 1/8th of a tank. It does take a while to get there and I'm sure I've hit the governor in doing so but the myth of these not being able to get up to speed is untrue. They just don't get there very fast.

My 6.2L K5 got about 17-22MPG with 31's and 3.42 gears.

Now with 35's, 4" lift and 3.42 gears i can get about 15-18. I got 16mpg on a long road trip in the fall. I was running it pretty hard and because of the gearing it didn't like staying in OD so i had it in 3rd for most of it. Overall good mileage considering the facts though.

'93 3/4 ton van 6.2 NA and it got aprx 17.5 mpg heavily loaded and in combined city and hwy driving. It has 3.08 gears and 235x15 tires. That was with a 4L60 trans, new tranny will be a TH400 but I'm not worried about losing the od (I'm going to load it heavier then before).

Well, I don't do 85 for long but a few times a year i do. So far no problems associated with doing it.

well, don't know why, but I roughly calculated my mileage with the CUCV. In 165 miles I used 11.5 gallons 75 miles of whihc I was carrying 1 ton of salt sand in the back. That's almost 14mpg. Better than I thought I was getting. Seems like it always needs fuel but the tank is very small.
