Well, today as I'm running down a long stretch of road, all of a sudden I hear flap, flap, flap, flap......So I pull over and see a plastic bag wrapped around my drive shaft and it worked it's way into the rear end, where the drive shaft meets the rear (yolk, is that what you call it?)......So I unwrapped the bag from the drive shaft, and I gently pulled the bag out of the rear end...(it was stuck in there pretty good)....Now the seal is leaking so I drive a few miles to the spring shop (Very capable and knowledgeable shop).

Now the whole way there I'm losing gear oil, but I'm going slow and stopping to let it cool down at intervals.....below the seal there is a good 3-4" so there is gear oil in there that won't leak out once it's below the seal right?

Anyway I asked another Truck and trailer shop what they thought, and they said I should be OK and that the bag probably pooched the "Pinion Seal"....change that and all is well?

Thoughts and input welcome!

Yep - not a big deal. It's amazingly easy to screw up that seal when something gets wrapped up in there...

You don't think I drove a little to far with no/or to little gear oil......are those G80's pretty stout? (without rear full?)....Thats what worries me.

You're good Louis. There's alot of oil below that getting swished around by the ring gear. Hell all the 12.5" G80s came from the factory with 2 qts in a 4 qt unit.

Louis, I would say that your fine. Hell GM ships out new truck with the fluid low right from the factory.

If your replacing the seal count the exposed threads and mark the nut and housing before backing the nut off. This way everything goes back to where it was with the correct pre load on the pinion bearings..

^^What Bill said. There is a complete online service manual in the 6.5 Tech Library under 'Manuals'; it has the R/R procedure for pinon seals for your truck.

UPDATE - Got my rig back

***UPDATE***

Got the truck back, the repair cost me $200.00.......Probably less than $5.00 in parts, but hey, everyone has to make a living...and I knew I was gonna pay top dollar because the shop (Unico Spring Corp) is known for their ($85.00 per hr labor rate) very capable/knowledgeable staff and repairs.

Everything seems to be fine, but I only drove a total 8-10 miles so far.....and she's "As she was" before the "Old plastic bag trick."

Well Bill, I figured I'd call up early this morning and tell them about the preload on the "Pinion bearing" and the response I got was....."So you want me to go tell a 62 yr old man, whose been working here for 20+ years, on how he should do his job?"

Me- "Well I just wanted to pass on a little info I got from a friend that.....////// Jimmy (Unico)- Cuts me off and says..."You know he might get a little insulted at the insinuation that I'm telling him how to do his job.....Do you really want to have me tell him that?.....He's probably worked on just about every rear end thats in a truck, but if you want me to go insult him, I'll tell him "you" called and thats what you wanted him to know......(Insert sarcastic tone)... So do you really want me to go insult him while he has his hands all up in your rear end pulling out plastic bag fragments?.....Guess what I said! LMAO

I'm just glad to have my rig back...(considering I dropped it off yesterday at 3pm, and got it back today at about 12:30pm)...without my rear leaking, the day before Christmas weekend, because it should be a little busy, and to be down a truck would really be a bummer.

"So do you really want me to go insult him while he has his hands all up in your rear end pulling out plastic bag fragments?....."
Now THAT'S funny!
