My best friend and room mate here at the Academy is looking for his first vehicle, and after being in my old 6.5 for so long, he thinks he wants to get into the 6.5 game (not to mention I'm ramping up to ditch my 08 in favor of a 6.5!) So today we went to look at some local 6.5's for sale.

First up was a 1995 k2500 VIN "S" 154,000 miles. black with red interior (IMHO the worst looking upholstery on the planet), Rust free texas truck with unknown history. So we meet up with the owner, who doesn't know a thing about trucks and pays garages to do all work needed (like a 450 dollar FSDCooler on the intake manifold.... :nonod: ) although he knew he had gotten hosed on that deal. Anyways, we fire up the truck and WOW, its nearly silent!! I put my hand on the intake and can feel the explosions, but the engine is not moving! drive it around and wow, very smooth, very quiet. Stock exhaust, EVERYTHING stock except for the intake (SSDiesel) and a nearly new GM-8 turbo. We were very impressed.

Next truck was at a used auto dealer, a 1998 k2500 Vin "F", 76,000 miles. First off, there is a PLOW on it :mad2: and a sign in the window that says "UNSAFE VEHICLE" and the dealer says that its because the ABS light is on... this is already not good, the dealer leaves no implication that they know how to fix it and it looks like they don't care. They are hesitant to let us drive it ("it's UNSAFE!!") wtf? but we take it for a ride, and it rides like its been plowing its whole life, its a bare bones truck with broken interior parts etc. Anyways we parked that thing and left very quickly, NO THANKS!

So the questions I have...

the 1995 put out a good puff of black and a constant haze under WOT, the 98 moderate haze and then almost nothing under WOT. The 1995 had the soot trap intact. Why would the "S" smoke more (felt more powerful too) with stock programing (it certainly didn't feel chipped, my old 98 at the GL4, I know chipped) than the "F"??

Also the 1995 idled SO SMOOTH and nearly silent, the 98 sounded like my old 98, loud clacking at start and a distinct diesel "Clack" after warm. The 95 seemed dull and certainly no "clack" what's different?

BTW, the guy wants $4,500 for the 1995 (easily talk-downable into the 37-38 range) and the used auto dealer wants.... $9,000 FOR THE 1998!!!! yes, $9,000!!

Way too much money . I bought my 97 with 85k and a 9' plow 3 1/2 years ago for 6500. Its a DRW w/ Utilitiy body. Too bad too, low miles is nice. Plus a plow is good way to make dough.... WAY too much money asked ..............

The 95 price seems right for a well running 6.5, rust free. Show him 3k cash, and leave a card with your cell if he doesn't bite. Watch his eyes when you show him the money. Call back in 2 days if you don't hear from him with an offer of 500 more, saying you came up with another 5, best you can do.

Whatever you do, don't go on a bender with that cash!

Yeah until you wake up in cot with a bunch of other inmates and Mr law looking at you and laughing. Morning Sunshine  UH HO, dont call the wife please mr law please don't call her. ):h

The sound of the engine could be due to the injection timing. Both my trucks clacked louder when i advanced the timing.

Could lower compression cause the shake? My blazer's engine has a slight shake to it, but the compression was all 100% even either(400 to 360). my pickup has no real shake unless you put your hand on it then you can feel it running, and the compression was all 400 or so with the lowest at 395 when i checked it last year.

And all of your personal items kept in a plastic bag, ... nothing but a single rolled up bill.

Good point.

Bio-Diesel would make an abnormally quiet diesel engine also.

timing and tdco make all the difference in the world with the smoothness.

No bio stations up here yet, so thats not a possibility, plus the smoke was deff. diesel scented. This guy was certainly NOT making his own fuel either! haha

I think the smoothness has to do with the TDCO probably being set to about -0.25, at the bottom of the factory setting range. And maybe it has 1800psi pop injectors in it that are typically just for the N/A 6.5s. My truck ran pretty smooth and quiet before I put in marine injectors, chipped the truck, and advance the timing to the max. Since then the clatter has increased. Even in my tame 40 degree winters that cold starting is really loud with it advanced.

It's easy to explain. Black smoke -> to much fuel, not enough air.
You said it's an "S" engine, so what's the diff between "S" and "F" engine ? Right the restricted intake of the "S" engine. So if you puch the pedal to the metal, ther isn't enough air to burn the fuel and you get black smoke. Even with the kitty in place. Had the same things with mine, but AFTER loosing the kitty (4"Warpspeedsystem) and unhooking the EGR System (not problem on a OBD-1 Truck, just remove the plastic hose from the valve to solenoid and close the rubber hose at the solenoid with a screw), I had no smoke anymore.

I bought mine with a plow. Many broken parts, 180k miles, fisher MM plow and beat hard, but i paid 1k. 9 is a joke.... The 95 sounds better, plus mods like a chip are cheaper than obd-1, and you can use gmtd scan on that one. Def. the better choice!

I'd say low ball the 98, especially since they were hesitant on letting you drive it... All of us know the damage that can result from snow plows and make your case. Worse they can say is no, and you're no worse off. I bought mine (off a farmer) with 155k, w/ original ball joints (no evidence of snow plow though), and it's treated me good. Also, how'd the brakes feel? The light could be from something as simple as the fuse. I have mine unplugged because I like to be able to control my own brakes...

Tested your injectors lately?....a slow closing nozzle can cause that
