Hi all, I’m trying to use my scanner to diagnose an engine cutting out after start up. Just a fast little hiccup . I want to see what’s the IP is doing when it happens right after startup. After inputting truck data and starting it up, the scanner disconnects and I have to re-enter data again and the event all ready happened. Is there away around this? Is this normal for the Tech2 to disconnect on start up? Anybody have this experience? Thanks Gus.

Thanks guys, the scanner came w/ 2 power feeds the lighter and battery cables. I’ve tried both. The batteries are recently new and the truck cranks over pretty fast but I’ll check loads. I’ll try hooking the scanner power feeds to a remote battery not hooked to the truck. Someone said it could even be the OBD 1 port. This could have the making of a nightmare🤯 I’ve had the complete dash out rebuilding the HVAC box. And I sure hope it’s not the IP. It is the second one. First one was defective. UGH 😩thanks again guys.

You can use instead of tech2 to view, record logs, extraneous graphics of engine and transmission parameters ScanXL professional. The program allows you to only view everything that Tech2 can see. but cannot give commands, except for resetting errors. Much more convenient than Tech2. as an adapter used ELM327- USB.

Thanks dena, my truck is a 95’ OBD 1 I’m using a Tech 2 on it. Will it work on a OBD 1 ? Maybe that could be the problem of my scanner disconnecting.

my 95 is obd1 but I use the GMTDscan on a laptop. I can't remember if it will disconnect when cranking. seems that those PCM's are slow to communicate on top of if the batteries are low or there is a ground connection issue in path to the PCM it can loose connection to the truck, scanner and IP during the cranking cycle.

if there is a ground issue, the starter will draw from the path of least resistance. check the ground strap between the block and frame, along with the ground cable from the batteries to the block. there also should be a smaller ground from the battery on the passenger side to the inside fender. one other thing to check is the connection between both batteries too.

put you a volt meter on the batteries and watch it during cranking. if it drops below 10 volts, the starter could also be drawing too much and shutting down electronics. computers and other electronics don't like less than 10v this can be your entire problem.

Where did the IP come from?
Better off having the original rebuilt

The IP is the second one from Quadstar. The fist one was defective. The second one was rebuilt and bench tested. I do still have the working original one. Maybe I’ll put that one back on for a test. But I believe it was also doing the same thing. I remember seeing the wait to start lamp blink when the event happened. The original one has been on and off several times for testing the first defective IP. Unfortunately I’m getting good at swapping IP,s 😂 my original IP was also rebuilt at at one time.It had a blue tag and a sticker with a date stamp on it. It’s so weird it happens like clockwork on the first start up of the day. Hit and miss through out the day. Never while driving. Still going to run down wiring harnesses. Very discouraged. Maybe I’ll try throwing an ignition switch at it since the event is intermittent sometimes. Can anybody out there point me in the right direction to solving this pia 💁 thanks.

But I doubt you want that route after investing in the ds4ss.

Hook up the power source via your battery clamp connections and add a volt meter with it so you see if that power or ground drops out any during the crank?

Just how pdm pins have an issue after so many swaps, the obd1 port could also. Maybe the issue is there?

Other than that I would say what you don’t want to hear: undo every ground connection, clean, reinstall. Next is the harness connections

Thanks Will, you might be on to something. I turned the parking lights on in my dark garage before the first start up of the day and the event happened along with the dash lights blinking. I have touched a lot of ground connections during the engine and trans. swap. And dash removal. I have checked ground connections at the typical places, intake manifold, neg. battery cables, 2 front fenders, 2 body and frame grd. straps passenger side. I can’t remember the grds I touched under the dash🤯. Also have to check the one back near the fuel tank. Any other I am missing?. Im also hoping I can rule out the IP causing this event. Good idea w/ the volt meter😎. Thanks again Will.

The chinese knock off tech 2's are well documented as shutting off whenever voltage drops below 12 volts to them. It has to do with the internal voltage regulator. It's the price you pay to get a tech 2 for under $2500. You can use an external power supply to power the tech 2, just make sure and connect the ground to the vehicles ground to avoid any data transfer issues or cross voltage spikes.

Good to know thanks a lot
