Working on a buddys truck which is a 93 6.5TD. He has no factory Tach. Does the alt on that year have a tach lead ? If so what signal does it put out ? Would an aftermarket tach work with it ?

If you use a Dakota Digital adapter you can run any gas tach . That's how I did my 92.

Yes, but I forget which terminal. I just checked them a test light to find the one that blinks.

Look at any 6.5 plug. they are all the same. One wire to turn on the alt and trigger the red battery light. The other is for the tach. Your plug may not have the wire, but, the alt has the pin and circuit in it. Ignition on and the plug terminal with voltage, at the plug, is the alt turn on wire. The other wire will be for the tach.

This is my notes.

Look at 1st pictures on page 1 and the explanation is on page 2.

It is terminal P, which is the farthest from the largest pin.

I hope this help.

OK, but on a traditional tach the tach signal comes from the Negative side of the coil. The signal from the alt is a pulsing pos signal right ? So a convertor is needed ?

Find a tach equipped diesel cluster and add some wires...

The alternator turns at like 20,000 RPM - this is going to produce many more than the 4 coil pulse per revolution on the unreal trucks with spark plugs. Coil is crank speed divided by two. The alt small pulley is driven by the big engine pulley to wind up to high speeds. then the internal windings give you even more pulses per rotation...

You can also get an aftermarket programmable tach that you basically hook up to the alt tach signal/pulse generator/magnetic pickup and then set up accordingly.

Isspro has a nice line up such as there R8585, they also show a magnetic pickup unit specifically for the 6.2/6.5. VDO makes them also as does Stewart Warner. I am or at least was a dealer for Isspro and could more than likely better the price shown on their website if you like.

To give you an idea here is a link to the R8585 manual.

OK, I guess his truck didn't have one. Would swapping the dash work ? Is the wiring present for the tach ? That is for my buddys 93. I still am looking to do some sort of tach for my CUCV as well but that will be dependent on wether I use the 200 amp alt from the Burb and convert to 12 or use a mag pickup and leave the 24v system intact. still on the fence there.
