The owner of the 92 truck i rebuild the tranny for last week phoned me this morning saying that he had on 2 occasions the tach and speedo maxing out just like that and return to normal. Truck never missed beat though.

Grounds mebby??

Or just crappy chevy gauges. Mine has had the tach stick many times and I can use my oil pressure gauge as a fan. Sometimes you just need to replace the entire gauge cluster, if it is not a bad ground of course. If it was just the tach I would think alternator but since it is both I think it might just be the gauge cluster itself. If you have a spare sitting around try putting it in. If you need one call Diesel Debot and let them know Ian who used to work at Heath Diesel told you to call them and ask for Jammie or Benny Avant. Good luck!

Check your alternator, ive had this happen 2 times and the speedo and tac went nuts ,then were fine for a while then the car died later on. it was the alternator, i think the voltage regulator was shot but just replace the whole thing anyway

thanks we just moved here, i just bought my first diesel last week, picking it up in edmonton tomorrw. im a sbc guy. im learning about diesel still, but didnt know about the tac, somone said it came off the alternator. thanks good info

i built a nice 383 stroker for my buddys suburban. it has alot of torque, nothin like the diesel. and the cubic inches vs torque vs fuel milage and life time of diesel vs gas, ive always been interested but weary(new world to me).i going to build a rat rod so im not leaving the sbc world anytime soon, but lookin forward to learn more. thanks guys
