I just went to wally world to pick up some rotella synthetic and about had a heartatack. When I bought a gallon in September it was $16.97 and today it was $22 for a gallon. What is the deal? I checked on the Kragen and AZ websites and they have it for $19.99. And all this now that oil is under $60 a barrel.

Yeah when i started using rotella synthetic a few years ago is was 13.74 a gal at wally. Who knows how long it will take to drop some with oil prices lower

last time i bought Amsoil 15w-40 synthetic it was about $34 a gallon. its over $9.00 a quart at the only store that carries it in town.

I noticed this yesterday as well. I might go back to dino since I noticed that only 2 gallons came out last oil change:eek:

Delvac, Rotella T and Delo are $11.77/gallon

Did Mobil 1 stop making synthetic diesel oil? They have a 15-50 but It is not for diesels, or atleast it doesn't say so.

Mobil 1 does still make a syn diesel oil. Delvac 1 ESP is a syn along with what they call Turbo Diesel Truck 5w-40. It comes in quarts. Mobil engine oil is tough for me to come across. A couple of auto parts stores, Farm & Fleet, and Wal-Mart have all had signs up saying that due to Hurricane Ike, Mobil's syn oil plants were damaged and have been taken off line for repairs. The sign they had up in Farm & Fleet said no new shipments of Mobil 1 products until around Dec. 22.

What about the myth or rumor that you can't go back to dyno oil once you switch to a syn? Cuz I have thought of making the switch back as well.

It is just that, a myth. Think of it like this. If you buy a used auto from a dealer, how do you know what oil has been run it? I have not heard any problems from people switching back and forth.

I may be wrong but the real difference is in the molecular(?) structure of the oil in that the syn. has smaller particules and flows better. I'm sure there are other differences but this is the main one I hear the most.

I don’t know that much about the synthetics for the diesels. The price just keeps me from doing it to my 6.5. I use Rotella T 15W-40. I did change to synthetic in my gasser. Castrol 10W-30 and have noticed a change in oil pressure, engine temps and gas mileage. The RPM’s are even 100 to 200 lower at cruising speed 60-65 MPH. May just be that the gasser has so many miles and flows the synthetic better, don’t know for sure but if it continues to get the MPG’s it is, I may have to change to synthetic in the 6.5 as well.

Yes you can switch between syn and conventional w/ no problems. Just make sure you don't forget you have conventional go over on the oil change interval.

And yes the syn has smaller molecules than conventional in addition to the additional addatives. People also think synthetic is non-petro. That is a myth. The reason it is called synthetic because it is synthetically engineered w/ smaller molecules. I got this straight from a cheveron chemist.
