Having my transmission worked on and putting in a new torque converter. Ive been thinking about using amsoil synthetic tranny fluid in tranny and t case. What are your thoughts on this? Will it be worth the extra cost? What will i gain from using synthetic? Anything i should look out for?

Thanks!

I would say wait 'til rebuild time. The older used clutches don't like the super slippery stuff sometimes..

But it's your money.

If you have the trans out to put in a new torque converter, I sure hope your going to have teh trans freshened up as well while it's out. This is a common thing to happen where somebody changes out the converter and a clutch pack inside lets loose right afterwards. Then you have to pull it again, and replace that new converter to get teh clutch material out as you cannot flush a converter. As for the fluid, I'm noit a huge amsoil fan for the trans based off of reccomendations from pro builders I've talked to. Actually I would go with the CITGO QUATRASYN if you can find it as it is a synthetic fluid that is fully DEX/MERC compatible as well.

When you say, "have the transmission freshened up" what do you mean by that? A rebuild?

So basically not worth putting the tranny back in with out servicing it first?
Thanks.

Unless it was just rebuilt a little while back and your just changing to a differrent stall converter or something, then I would HIGHLY reccomend pulling it all the way down and replacing the bands and at least inspecting the clutches. Also while you have teh trans out is the best time to do the TRANSGO shift kit as you need to pull the trans to drill the bypass hole to help the converter hold better.

Yes thank you! I already ordered the 1300-1600 stall converter and was already thinking of ordering the transgo hd 2 kit.

Have plans to have the shift solenoids and internal harness replaced, looks like im gonna be adding bands now too.

You should end up with a much better trans, less worries, much happier. I mean once it's on the bench- do it to it.

I dropped the pan on my tranny and found metal shavings inside, could this mean my tranny is worse then i thought? Maybe needs a whole rebuild? maybe replace?

Metal shavings isn't good. Could be from the converter, or from a shaft that is grinding inside. Metal filings always means a tear down and inspect.

Its normal to have some fine powdery metal off the clutches in the pan but if your talking pencil shavings like stuff then yea could be trouble.

Yeah there were a few like pencil shavings in there, this makes me nervous. i dont even want to mess with this tranny now. Im thinking about buying a replacement transmission, maybe a monster transmission?
