Hi, new to this site. I'm trying to change engines in a 1995 Chyenne 3500hd duelly diesel to a 350 small block. was told it will work. does anyone have any info on this swap?

X2
Less value by 75%...
Lots that can be done to wake up a 6.5 cheaply and really wake it up especially if you get hard-core like me and some others have. You have 2x the torque and the same HP as a 350 in factory trim.

Trade for a gas truck would be a better plan.

Drop in a 454 and then you have something worth the time to consider.

Seeing as how he is in Valdez AK, he may want something that will start easily in the cold without having to plug it in. We all know the 6.5 can be cantankerous to start in extreme cold.

To answer the original question, just look for one of the many threads that converted a gasser to diesel and work backwards.

IIRC, the 350 has issues with the crankshaft, so do some research to make sure you are not looking to get out of the diesel for Reason-X only to get into another set of known issues; also, expect a step backward in fuel economy when comparing a well tuned 350 to a well tuned 6.5.

Might want to consider outlining goals for the truck (Ex: easier starting in cold, my engine is about to die anyway and the closest diesel supply is X00 miles away, wife hates the diesel so I need something that makes less noise, etc . . .) as (per the other comments) it may prove much less expensive and easier to do some modifications to the 6.5.

And by the way, Welcome to TTS!

Welcome!!!

I wonder the same thing?

The 350 is an engine for 1500 truck aka 1/2 ton truck while 3500HD is a 1 ton truck HD?
So you are trying to use a 1/2 ton truck engine to run 1 ton truck?
You will undersize everything and wonder why it will not run?

The 350 was a factory option from GM in all of the GMT-400 platforms as well as the 3500HD.

I guess you can put any size engine into any body/frame.

It is just a matter of knowledge and tooling.

I know there are a lot of beefed up 350 engines out there, too, which may even be more powerful than a stocker 6.5L diesel.

I'm thinking a 350 is a bit smallish for a 3500 and somebody correct me if I'm wrong, arent the trannies different as well? it may bolt up but the gearing is different. so you may have to change the trans as well. A big block with a 400 transmission is probably a better match.

His 4L80E is a perfect choice (assuming its auto?). Just put a gasser TC on it. Any trans that was behind the diesel will work great with a gasser.

Yup the trans is the same, even a NV4500 will bolt up with the right clutch set up. GM offered all HD transmissions behind all engines in 2500 & 3500 trucks.

Thanks for the reply, I have a 350 sitting around. It does get cold here(27 below zero with wind chill last winter plus 400 inches of snow)

Having owned a small block 1ton - if you are running it fairly stock, you might be disappointed. The 3rd install of mine was the charm. The 4-71 charger helped a bit.

Put in manual gauges, run the same tranny you have. Just pick the appropriate flywheel. Reuse the wiring to the starter, adding on to the harness so you can convert back in the future. Depending on tranny you might have starter issues, set aside $ for that. Custom fuel tank pick-up &stainer assy.
Run an aftermarket electric fuel pump. Gasser fan & shroud. What ignition are you going to run? How about fuel system?

Not trying to sound "preachy" but you know this is not a cheap way out right? Decent expense for the swap and less power, more fuel consumption. Unless you are going high performance, then more power and a lot more fuel:thumbsup:

Let us know what your end result is you want and budget, there is a bunch of experience here...
