Has anyone experienced any steering issues on their 2001-2007 trucks? If so, what were the characteristics of the problems? I think I may be experiencing a loss of power from the steering. The steering just feels different to me lately. I checked the fluid, and it appears to be fine. I am just wondering how one would go about diagnosing a steering box issue? To me, it appears that I have about half the power steering that I once used to have. The power steering pump may be starting to fail. Anyone with any insight on this? Thank you in advance.

There was an issue with trying to turn the wheel when using the brakes during a parking maneuver on earlier trucks but I don't recall all of the details other than some steering resistance is normal because of the brakes taking priority.
I know that steering out of my parking spot at work in the evening (a hard left and immediate hard right at real slow speed) is showing a ton more resistance now that the weather is colder. Much more difficult than backing into the spot in the morning after a 60 mile drive :agreed:. I would venture a guess that as miles stack up then the less efficient the pump is. I don't know if there is a filter in there but if there is or not, a change of oil (and filter?) may be worth a try.

I would do the flush procedure with a good synthetic PS fluid, or ATF. If that doesn't help, lets go from there.

I am unaware of any filters for the power steering pump. If there is, could anyone else enlighten us please. I was also not privy to any flush procedure. Is there already a thread on that that I missed? When the truck was new, it would provide more power assisted steering at slow speeds (Example in a parking lot trying to park, the power steering would be easier). And less while driving on the highway at speeds. I know feel that I have some kind of combination in between, and it seems like it is a constant, where I see no difference at high or low speeds. I am a little stumped, unless I just need a new power steering pump? What kind of issues were caused by the actual steering box? I remember reading about the steering boxes failing.

When my steering box failed on the '05 LLY at around 30k it was a serious leakage out the shaft issue. Might have been more to it than that but I wasn't aware of anything else. The one on the '03 8.1/A just didn't want to turn at all when at parking speed and I just put up with it for the 53k I had it.

Thanks for the responses. My tires are fine, as I run 60 psi in all 4. I see no leakages of oil anywhere. There is oil in the pump reservoir. I'll have to check further.
