Steering box rebuild?

So I have an old k3500 and it has a lot of slop in the steering. I recently (within the last thousand miles) replaced the idler arm, upper ball joints, upper control arm bushings, and the pitman arm is next (though it doesn't have much play). Naturally, with everything tightened up down there my thoughts turn to the big ugly steering box. Instead of getting a new one I am entertaining the idea of $25 rebuild kits from rockauto for a new learning experience and saving some cash. Anyone done this before? Couldn't be too much going on in there right?
 
I have done it years ago on another GM. If its the recirculating ball type you will need atleast one special tool or make your own. It holds the balls inplace while you insert a gear IIRC.
 
Great link, I had no idea you could adjust those. Well there you have it. Any idea how long it would take to pull it from the truck? The steering box is probably the only thing that I haven't touched yet on my truck
 
The majority of the time all they need is adjusting. I have only seen 1 worn out to the point it needed to be rebuilt, and it was on a farm truck that did nothing but slow speed turns off road all day. Don't forget about the idler arm bracket assembly while your doign the front end. Also I HIGHLY reccomend using teh MOOG problem solver parts as they are built heavier(espescially the idler bracket assembly). I ALWAYS do all 3 at the same time(idler, idler bracket, and pitman), otherwise if you put just 1 in and the others have any slack you just ruined that new part.
 
Good to hear that they rarely wear out, I will adjust it and do the pitman and see if the heavy chevy handles like a vette afterwards. Quick ratio anyone? haha
 
The one I rebuilt was only because I had the case powdercoated. Getting the bearings back in is a trick.
