Well I think that my starter soleniod isn't up to snuff. Has anyone had the problem of the starter not fully engaging? I usually use the the command start to start it, but today I was across the the parking lot at work and heard it start too turn over but then it started grinding like it wasn't fully engaged with the ring gear like it slipped out of the teeth. I shut it off as soon as I heard it start to grind, I crawled under to make sure the starter bolts hadn't backed out, or the connections were lose but everything was tight. I hopped in and just started it with the key and it started like it should.

Are these known to go bad? Is there a way I can rebuild it? I'm pretty strapped for cash right now, and I can hold my own with a set of wrenches.

I haven't had the time to inspect the ring gear as of yet. Life seems to have delt me a crappy hand right now and I'm struggling keep my skin right were it is. So ANY idea's and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My guess is the selenoid is getting weak and won't throw the drive out as hard and as far as it used to. Was the engine warm also? Could be some heat soak if it was. Also would be a good time to check all your batt and starter wire connections.

I agree, if it is ok with key and not remote, sounds like an electrical problem with the remote system. load test batteries- and good tight. clean connections all around. got a new one for 130(smaller auto parts store) couple months ago.

You can purchase the solenoid seperatly, NAPA part# ST181, $204. Reman starter $264, and new $284. If you have a NAPA in town, they may be cheaper. Those are online prices. If nothing else, check the salvage yard, and you may be able to pick up a cheap starter, or just the solenoid. I've been there, and sometimes patching together lasts longer than new.

we had problems with remote starts on older gm vehicles in th mid 90's.Remote start units with built in relays couldn't carry enough current, and the starter would grind like a bad solenoid. the solution was to add a bosch type relay to trigger the starter.

Sorry I haven't replied until now, I just have bin swamped with regular duties of life, and i'm haven't had much time for the computer. Thanx to everyone responding to my cry for help.

I'll try this route first since it is a '95.

I don't know if my problem is anything to do with yours, but I cannot get my truck to start sometimes. It is random when I go to start it and I hear clicking, but no starter engaging. Sometimes it is fine, others I have to push start it.

I am thinking it could be a bad ground??

That sounds like a dead spot or two on your starter.

This might help your problem, or not. Check your pass battery cable, it has a little wire that goes down to your starter, mine was corroded at the battery treminal, and would cause a no start some times. Lesson learned for me, was CHECK ALL YOU CABLES!! both pos and neg. pull them off, inspect and clean them up good. if yours has the stock lug in the battery cable at the end, dig it out and replace it with a bold and nut assem. to make for a better contact, and a place for accessories.

Well much to my dismay, it did it again today when I tried to start it with the key. Conclusion, I'm going to have to replace my solenoid.
