Is it typical to have to remove the slave cylinder in order to remove the starter? I saw no other way to get the starter out without doing so.

'95 6.5 TD

when we tore down dad's 92 for bellhousing replacement, IIRC we were able to get it down no issue. might have pulled the crossover first, but I know the slave was still in place.

I don't recall having an issue with mine. The biggest pain was that little bracket.

X2!!! Just did a starter on Garry and fortunately at the time it was missing- now I am going to remove the new starter this weekend and install the brace. Made the repair 40miles from home at the time and did not have one on me or I would have done it then!

I hate changing out 6.X starters! The only job as bad as a starter is the power steering pump with the same location PIA bolt (for the bracket) as the starter brace. Grind a cone on the threads on the end of the bolt going into the block makes the job easier. (PS bracket and starter bracket block bolt only)

X2 on both jobs. I thought I was the only one with that opinion.

I still have no idea how you guys all got your starters out without removing the slave cylinder. I'll try to get some photos at some point to see if I'm even looking at the same setup you guys have.

I just realized, all the starters I have dropped have been on 2wds.

I bet the 4wd (torsion bars) combined with the 95 and older external slave, may be impossible. I wont know till i need to do it on my 93.

I pulled all wiring off through the fender well, and had to go way forward and snaked it over the slave IIRC.
