Hey there. I am having trouble starting my truck. I replaced my original starter with one from a 6.2 because the nose cone on my original broke off. Anyway, when I try to start my truck, it will crank until it wants to start but the pinion will disengage and the starter will just spin without cranking the motor. I was thinking that maybe the ignition switch may be bad causing the solenoid to disengage, but then the starter would not keep spinning, right? I replaced the solenoid with a new one also. Thanks for any help.

UPDATE: I disconnected the starter at the battery and had the wife crank the key while I watched the starter. The pinion does not look like it engages into the ring gear very far. I do not have the bracket on right now, but will pick one up from the dealer when they get it tomorrow. Starter bolts are torqued down to spec. Could the starter move far enough to disengage when the motor tries to fire? Is the pinion on a 6.2 direct drive starter smaller than a gear reduction starter causing it not to engage into the ring gear deep enough? Thanks for any help.

Steve

Depending on which 6.2 starter you have they should be indentical. If they look the same should be no problem. Older 6.2s had a starter that looked like a bigger version of a gasser starter. The newer 6.2 starters look a little more compact and exactly like the 6.5 ones. I have never tried to use an older 6.2 on a 6.5 although in theory it should work. The newer design 6.2 will direct repalced a 6.5. I had both side by side and no difference. the drive is pulled into the flywheel by the soleniond on top. that could be weak or bad or like was said it could be the drive. The are pretty easy to replace if you can find an auto parts store that actually sells them.

It is the direct drive starter (the pig). When I first put it in, it seemed to work fine then it started acting up on me. It looks like the pinion shoots out far enough, just doesn't engage ring gear as deeply as it could, possibly becoming disengaged as the motor tries to light off. Thanks.

did you happen to check the pivot bolt to make sure it's still there? the other thing you could be hitting is a binding problem. a little dab of grease on the shaft usually fixes it. did you check the motion when it was out of the truck? just ground the case and tap a live wire to the solenoid and watch the fingers.):h

I did check the operation of the starter before I installed it. I even greased it up like Number suggested. I don't think it is binding as the starter still spins freely after it disengages from the ring gear.

I still vote for the starter drive I've had them do exactly as your describing. Kicks out just a bit to soon.

I pulled the starter out and ak diesel driver had it right. The gear would sometimes catch when I spun it by hand and sometimes it would slip. Off to NAPA to buy a new starter drive and pick up my starter bracket. Thanks for all the help.
