Got a little Splash Plate envy with the lifted trucks running around here with their customized replacements.
Found a piece of aluminum diamond plating and had it cut and bent to match the old unit.
Pretty straight forward.
- Take diamond plating and old splash plate to local metal works fabrication shop if you don't have the skills/tools or both like me.
- Retrieve finished product a couple of days later.
- Drill out the rivets for the front mounting bracket on the old unit.
- Center the bracket on the new piece and mark holes.
- Drill out with 1/4" bit. Attach bracket and check for fit on the truck.
- Remove bracket and put it on "correctly" and check for fit.:???:
- Remove bracket again and put it back the way you had it in the first place because for once in your life you got it right the first time.:mad2::rof:
- Mark cross member attachment points and drill out with a step bit(? [one of those plumb bob looking bits]). I used a dab of thread sealer in the holes, and with the plate mounted at the front, pressed the back against the cross member mounting holes and had my marks. Drill and put the whole thing back in.
Looks pretty good but with the addition of the air dam you can't see it unless you're under there, I guess the point was moot.:skep:
If the metal had a flatter surface at the back, it would work great as heat sink too but it is a little flimsy and not machined smooth. Still, I think it looks pretty good.
