So - someone asked me:
Since this is a hobby of mine I do not feel bad shamelessly putting this out here in public and flaunting my skillz ;-) and maybe infect others with the silent virus ;-) (i know it is not rocket science, but you need a natural attention to detail and perfectionism)...
So the answer is: yes, i can and i do.
my builds are always Lian Li cases and contain in short :
- custom case feet (decoupled)
- bequiet noise absorption kit ((bitumous felt) of 2.2mm, fleece inside front panel)
- custom (cut and soldered to length) wiring harnesses in shrink tubing
- "tucked" wiring where applicable (all wires behind mobo tray!)
- individually designed air flow concepts
- modded 4412 120mm Pabst fans (i.e. 4412 F/2GLLL: 35,29cfm at 14dB(A))
- all fans mounted decoupled
all of this takes forever, but i do have enough of the bequiet stuff in stock to do 2 more cases.
the bequiet stuff (only sold in Europe and Taiwan) and the Pabst fans is shipped to me from Europe, since the silent trend has not caught on that much in the USA, I guess since there is enough space to assign an entire room to the PC? In downtown munich i lived in a 1 room apartment (not one bedroom, one room ;-)) and the PC was my PC, my stereo, my DVD player, my VCR and gaming machine all one and ran 24/7 -> hence it had to be silent since it is 2 feet from my bed ;-)
the result is to be measured in sone, since dB(A) do not apply here anymore.
the last guy i built one for called all his neighbors over and kept asking:
"Can you hear it - can you?" and giggled like a little girl ):h
so much for the silent stuff, the rest is carefully and individually coordinated components which i mostly source from newegg where i have a preferred account (free rush order processing). I like to stick to certain manufacturers that have treated me right over the past and that I just simply know don't take shortcuts. no sense putting all that work in it and then using crap.
This is only 25% of the work, since the hard part comes with the software part as most here will know, but that would be another thread....
i am sure i can unpack the Lian Li from the original case, do a build and ship it again in the original Lian Li case since they are very well packed (brushed aluminum), all you would have to put back in upon delivery yourself is the CPU cooler, since I use oversized coolers that either barely clear the case or need cutouts and weigh a ton - these coolers are meant to be removed for transportation (check the pics below) !! That thing was humongous, and can break a motherboard easily when dropped or such....
here is some pics of the last build (sorry for going overboard with the pics, but as you can tell i put a lot of work in to one of these):
(questions, comments, requests - feel free...)
