I noticed today that the 6.2 I have has some diferences in the water pump and also in the water pump backing plate compaired to my 6.5

The 6.2 is 3/16 to a 1/4" longer than than the 6.5.
The nipple that go's to crossover is 3/4" on the 6.2 vs 1" on 6.5
The backing plate bolt spacing is different where you bolt up the Water pump.
The water pump pulley will not interchange because the bolt spacing is off.

well, that shows you pay attention. But a guy can still exchange assemblies though, but not between v-belt drive and snake belt drive.

The v-belt drive water pump runs the opposite direction of the surpentine drive pump. 91-93 [599 block] 6.2s use a surp. drive.

Im glad I noticed it while the engines are out. Makes it easier to swap out now than later.

They may not have put the surp. drive on the old body style. My 91 k2500LD had surp drive. A 93 6.2 I bought out of a bus had v-belts. The older 6.2s had 2 piece rear main seal also[different crank].

no the were not,up to and 88 they had v belts.
89 and up 6.2 and 6.5 will interchange all parts no prob.Eccept pistons and timingchain cover (CPS)

Are you sure they use the same crank 89 and up? When did they change from the 2 piece rear main seal to the one piece?

That would probably explain why my fan pulley sticks out more than the other pulleys and I am eating belts. I'm not sure what to do about it either.

I can also confirm that a 6.5 oil pan won't fit a 6.2 block. There was about a 1/4 inch gap between the pan & block at the rear main seal.

Also check the timing marks.

Are you talking about on the gear or the housing? What am I looking for? it does have the timing mark on the cover just like my 93.

What belt/s are you running?

I was all pissed off when I saw the set up was different, but GM usually makes things idiot proof for a reason. It would be good it GM would put an arrow on them.
I say idiot proof because if I could have bolted everything up with the 6.2 water pump and my 6.5 serp belt set up I would have spent hours tring to figure out why it overheats.....ect
I think the reverse rotation water pumps have a different bolt pattern on the pulley. Thats what clued me in and got me to looking.
